Ammunition Shipping Question
« on: December 26, 2018, 12:16:00 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I will be moving to Hawaii in November 2019 from Maryland. I have about 150 pounds of ammunition. Mostly 12 gauge birdshot and 9mm, what is the cheapest and most cost effective way of getting all of it to Hawaii? I’m already planning on bringing 50lbs via Alaska airlines but what of the rest?

Thank you for reading!

What calibers are you planning on bringing?

Honestly, 9mm isn't that much cheaper compared to the mainland.  But other calibers can be worth it.

Remember, Hawaii treats ammo and firearms the same.  Which means, once you land, you have to go straight home.  No stopping for food or coffee.  And same goes when buying ammo from the store.  Must to straight home, range,  or to your business. "Places to keep" law.  Also to have ammo on yourself (1 round in your pocket) and not at your home or business is a against the law unless you have a Hawaii issued CCW permit (Zero issued in years).

ammo is considered hazmat for transporting by air so it is very expensive to get it here since pretty much every shipping company (UPS, Fedex,) uses air.    For example, if you go spend $200 on ammo online the shipping will be sometimes $300 just to ship it here.

Best is in the shipping container with the rest of your stuff if you are moving stuff.  There are regulations about how it is labeled in case customs cuts off the lock off your shipping container and inspects everything (even though it is still the USA).  But there isnt an extra charge to put it in a shipping container with the rest of your stuff.

You also cant ship a vehicle here with stuff inside it, it has to be empty.

Up to 11lbs on most airlines, 50lbs on Alaska (confirm with airlines).

Honestly,  its cheaper to just buy those calibers locally

You'll probably break even at best shipping it here vs selling and buying again. Unless those are expensive match or self defense ammo.
