If you dont mind me asking, which safe did you end up getting and how much was it. I'm thinking of picking one up soon.

Sorry...worked 12 hours today.  Didn't have time to log on until now.  Hope you picked one up.  I picked up the Stack On 10 Gun safe.  Hope this helps.

Anyone who bought a safe around this time can try and get price adjustment.  I did today and saved $41 more dollars!  It's 249.99 and can use 20% discount with it!

picked up a drawer safe and used the 20% coupon before seeing this thread. I might go back and pick up a long rifle safe

Go for it...if you get the Safe on 10 gun safe it comes out to ~ $200, I don't think you'll be able to find it cheaper anywhere or for a long while.

Follow the recommendation of others in related gun safe threads: buy one as big as you can painfully afford because the one that you buy will probably be too small for you in a short time. Safes' advertised capacity are deceiving and can probably comfortably hold only about half as much as advertised.

This is very true. The capacity ratings on bargain safes don't account for scoped or AR/AK type rifles. Something else to consider is that the Stack-on safes at SA are not fireproof. If you're just starting out, they should be ok. But if you plan to collect...Save up for something like a Liberty. They cost 5-10 times more (depending on size) but are 100 times better.

Stack-on may have changed their product line since you last checked because my safe is fire rated although i have no idea how effective it is.  The safe is lined with a fireproofing cementious-type board that is commonly used in a lot of fire safes.  If you are interested in finding out just how "safe" your safe is, just check youtube. There are a lot of videos out there that show how quickly a thief can break into you firearm safe.

The 14 gun Stack-On is fire rated; I called and asked but the guy at SA did not know but looking at the sticker on the door of the safe it says it is.

Yes it is rated by some sort of California standard i believe. Something like...guaranteed to withstand 1400 deg F for 30 min. I think it spells out what that means in the brochure that comes with the safe. It probably means that stack-on guaranties that the safe will withstand explosure to 1400 deg of heat for 30 minutes but everything inside will be incinerated. :D   The door is also lined with a hard plastic-like stripping that is supposed to swell when exposed to heat.

Here's a pointer: if you intend to use the safe to store valuables other than your firearm (like hardrives, jewelry, documents), keep them at the bottom of your safe to maximize their chance of surviving a fire.

I tell my wife that some day I'll eventually own enough guns to require a 10+ gun safe. She goes on and on about how she doesn't want a giant safe the resembles dracula's coffin in the house.

Any of your wives complain about that sort of thing?

I'm well aware of Stack-on products, but that's a moot point because the 10-gun safe (selling for $200 after coupon) that was being discussed just before your post is this one. It is primarily sold as a secure storage to beginners and the buget minded, but is neither fire proof or resistant. There is nothing wrong with the Stack-on, it is what it is. But if given a choice (especialy after seeing YouTube videos), most would opt to save for something better to secure their firearms.

That material is gypsum, which is used in all modern fire resistant/proof safes (the quality and thickness determines it's performance). A good quality fireproof safe has 3-6 inches of insulation, thick gauge steel, usually weighs over 300lbs empty, and is UL tested. They are usually the only thing left standing after a house has burned down around it. Stack-on's are ETL certified...but I wouldn't put much faith in ETL Semko's testing standards.  They do not go the extra step of pushing products to failure (like UL). ETL only tests up to a specified benchmark (hence the 30 minutes up to 1400°F).  What happens after 31 minutes is the difference between fire resistant and fire PROOF.

Show her a wall rack or cabinet then ask her which she prefers. Either way you win.

That's easy. Just tell her that with a 32-gun safe, there's room inside for her to expand her jewelry collection.

I'm going to get the 10 rifle safe because I;m going to be picking up an AR in the near future. Then it occurred to me "hey my rifle is going to be lonely in there. i'm going to need to get more!"

Reasoning like this is just sick.

Sick awesome.

Nice! I can't do a wall rack or cabinet. Not with the kids running rampant  :( Unless I had my own man cave, but even then she complains that she'd never ever see me because I'd always be in there....and she's absolutely right! haha

That's easy. Just tell her that with a 32-gun safe, there's room inside for her to expand her jewelry collection.

I don't know about that one, that means I'd have to go and buy her more jewelry to help fill all the space I made for her. I'd rather just leave it as "there's more room for her" in there  :shaka:
