Making a Sap Cap
« on: October 20, 2020, 12:09:50 PM »
On another thread I mentioned a cap I made with a 7oz lead weight sewn in.  Just thought I would post some pictures to show what it looks like.  They are going to be 3 or 4 posts with pictures so please post any comments after I am done so the pictures are all in sequence.

The first step is selecting the right cap.  The one below won't work because you cannot conceal the weight. Also the stiff backing in the front will not allow a good grip.

You need to get a cap where the back does not have any gap, like this one.

I made an extension to store the weight for longer range and striking force.  You can also see the front of this cap has no stiff backing and you can get a good grip.

I fold the extension inside when wearing it.  I wanted to post that picture, only 889kb, but got a file too large response  so I am done for now.  If any have suggestions for improvement let me know and if I like it, I will incorporate it in my next one.

So TSA says nothing if the "extension" happens to flop out and swing free?

To be on the safe side, I take the weight out of the extension and put cap and weight in my carry on.  I have taken 4 flights between Hilo and Honolulu with my first cap which did not have the extension and the weight sewn in with no problem.  If they did pull out the lead weight and asked about it I would say it is a paper weight as I like to do my proposals and invoices outside.

After I pass security,  I pull my cap out and insert the weight.   With all the crazy incidents happening on airplanes now days, us old people need some way to protect ourselves.  Cap is extremely fast to deploy.  In a confrontation you could hold up two hands open on the side s of your head, "Hey, I don't want any trouble " and then grap cap with both hands and bang, straight to the face.  It will break a nose or eye socket for sure.  I was thinking hit and run, but this guy gave me other ideas of what to do.

Thanks for posting the pics for me oldfart.  If I hit someone on the side of the face with the Bucheimer sap, it would break their jaw.  Pretty sure the sap cap would do the same. I made the lead plate from a fishing weight melted with a propane torch.  Lead melts at only 600 degrees.

There’s also this one but I’m not sure it would pass TSA. Would be cool though.

I think, therefore I am armed.
