Even though we are looking at a cold spell this weekend into next week, I am planning my first trip out to the desert for some plinking/practice time.

I’m looking for some ideas for a portable shooting plate stand I can disassemble into enough pieces so I can fit into my trunk. I am not looking for someone to Google it for me. I have done this already. I want real world experience from you guys.

I have previously tried the plastic pieces that use rebar for the legs and crossbar. I don’t like it. The plastic pieces don’t last long. I am thinking of iron pipe or metal conduit. I like the iron pipe because I think it is strong enough to weather the punishment. And I wonder if conduit is heavy duty enough and stand up to abuse and not get knocked down when hit? I want to put on 2 plates either a 6” or 8” and a 4”. I think 4’ long legs and crossbar is big enough for what I want.

If you have experience with a commercial product that can be broken down enough to fit in a car trunk then please let me know.

I've used the conduit stands and wood stands and one I made out of galvanized pipe
the one I made is the most durable.  even though I've shot it a few times, its still standing in good shape for a few years
the conduit ones start to sag if you shoot it
the wood ones may last longer even if you shoot it, just depends if you shooting shotgun slugs vs 22LR or something like that
galvanized pipe is also the heaviest for its size, the wood maybe the lightest for its size
depends on the environment too what material will last or get wet, etc
I also have a lighter weight metal one that breaks down for transport easy but isn't as durable I don't think. don't quite know yet bc I haven't shot the stand yet

this one is at the farm.  not as easy to transport but I just leave it there so not bad.  could be lighter weight if you use 1 x 4 for the legs

The rebar setup that I think one of the black powder guys had seemed pretty good.  Maybe you can take up side jobs inspecting up there and get some scrap rebar and have the iron workers and welders fashion you something.

I bent a shepherds crook out of 1/2" re-bar and clamp it to a T-post driven into ground.
Sometimes need to shim between hose clamps,t-bar and re-bar  depending on t-post
Fast, easy, reliable (till you expertly shoot the re-bar  ).
Depends on ground if you can drive t-post into sand or soft soil a with 3# hammer or need a post driver for hard soil.

As for the base i just pounded the 2x4 into the ground after pouring water to make the dirt a bit softer. Later ill buy the correct stand. The advantage to this is if i buy more i can shoot at different heights  as well as spread them out.  So i can do some foot work. Or while i shoot 1 my other bajillion friends can shoot the others.

Right now i just have a 8 inch wide, 1/2 inch thick round plate and a 12 inch, 0.5 inch thick rectangle plate. Both are ar500. Works good with pistols. Never tried rifle yet.

Also a bonus, i put them in my back seat. I drive a sedan so im limited on trunk space. Idk if metal will rip my interior but i know wood wont as long as its not jaggedy edged. Ive transported wood 2x4, 4x4, shelving alot.

Does anyone know the rules about the gong targets? I saw what was posted on the website but I heard people say they were nitpicking the gong targets. One person said they have to be a certain height off the ground, another said they have to hang from two points and not just one.

I made one simply stand out of rebar but after a few shots it wobbled and fell over. Trying to figure out a new stand, one that I can take apart for easy storage. I am just brainstorming ideas at this point though so I don't have any drawings or pictures to post.

I'm pretty confident you won't shoot up the legs or cross bar.  Or the steel targets as well for that matter.   

Just kidding.  I'm just jealous you have the flexibility and freedom to set up and shoot stuff like that.
