Electric motors have many significant advantages over petroleum based engines.  But the need for batteries is the biggie.  We simply do not know
how to quickly store electricity in large amounts.
Till that gets solved, electric cars are for rich Eco-nuts, that have the illusion that they are saving the Earth.

HI is good for EVs, compared to other states. Not like u can drive across states and need to charge. All urban driving.

Tesla has a grid and lets u know when to stop and charge and for how long via their gps network for long trips on their quick charging stations (superchargers).  Idk if other EVs have the same.

Hawaii energy prices are also a bit higher which makes solar and other alternative energy forms more attractive to power the EVs.

I think the problem with the criticism is that many use it as a reason to ignore EVs or crap on alternative energy forms. EVs have a lot of advantages but a few big disadvantages but we should remember that it has not had the level of development that internal combustion engines have. There are a lot of promising developments and we shouldn't abandon them for oil which we all know isn't the best thing for the environment. Look at how internal egine combustion efficiency has improved and imagine how good EVs could be given the same level of improvement.

Hawaii has been the king of trying alternative forms of energy production since the 70s . We have tried Wind, Geothermal, OTEC, Clean Coal, H-Power, Sugar Cane bagasse. Even some funky stuff trying to tap ocean wave action to generate power. I wish the State Government worked as hard trying to diversify the economy as much as they have tried with sources of power.

 People need to get over the dirty hippies fear of Nuclear power and move forward. There are reactors running all the time tied up to the at the docks of Pearl Harbor and no one screams we are all gonna die while that is happening.

We have tall mountains, why not consider using elevation + water as a battery for the green energies.

Look up public testimony (EIS, EA, etc) for any project at Pearl. Lots of comments about dangers of nuclear. Some pretty interesting comments actually. 

Should make folks in prison run on treadmills or ride exercise bikes to generate power. At least enough to power the prison.
