Machine guns are so last-century.

I want lasers!  They are so much quieter.

I want lasers!

Any armchair criminologist will tell you that the number one problem most criminals have is getting rid of a dead body. The obvious answer is an energy weapon that can vaporize the body, reducing it to ash. This would have allowed the Times Square Torso Killer to evade detection and capture. He attempted to burn bodies the old-fashioned way, and it was messy.

Now the question is, will possession of an energy weapon be legal under the second amendment? Perhaps this will be the litmus test for arms advocates, in the 21st century. Sure, as a Star Wars fan, I would acquire an energy weapon if it were legal. This would be the ultimate home defense weapon. But, the cartels would use it to gain supremacy in their line of business.

The Court has ruled that the definition of "arms" is not limited to firearms.  It encompasses any object or device that can be used in the defense of oneself, others, ones home, and one's property.  So swords,  knives, bows and other weapons are included if they are used to "arm" oneself.

And, since lasers are not going to leave behind ballistic evidence tracing back to a specific weapon, I see no need in vaporization.  Not leaving a body would suck for anyone who needed closure, especially if there is life insurance and the desire to remarry involved.

The amount of fuel needed to completely reduce a human body to ash is quite a lot. So much in fact it is surprising you don't see more climate change activists complaining about cremation. But thats another topic.

A weapon that could vaporize you would need intense amounts of energy

I used to work on black ops projects. One ounce of matter, converted perfectly to energy would produce 679,447,486 KWH of energy. It takes around 1,200 KWH to cremate a human being. Within this century, energy weapons will be a reality. Whether the earth will be around by that time depends on CO2 levels. But, there's an answer to that problem too, with respect to cremation.

Criminals would love to get their hands on a weapon that eliminates all evidence AND the body, since it's almost impossible to charge someone with murder without said body.  it's been done, but those are exceptional cases.

To charge murder, you have to first prove that the alleged victim is, in fact, deceased.

Read in "The Curve of Binding Energy" that the amount of mass converted to energy in the Nagasaki bomb was about 1/3 of a penny.

I still ponder that.

Personally I think there is way too much that goes into disposing of human bodies. Adds a lot of money and pollution. Chuck my body into a compost pile. (sorry off topic)
