The population is mostly Sunni Moslem.
Moslems aren't known for their tolerance of
freedom.
Freedom involves individual choices.
Some people can't make their own choices. They prefer to be told what to do, or at least guided into choosing what is "right," so they can't be blamed for making a bad choice.
I learned early in my marriage how wives love to trap their husbands in the "whatever you think is fine" trap.
Him: "Should we buy this car?"
Her: "Whatever you decide is fine with me."
Him: "Man! That new car is only 6 months old, and it's spent more than half that in the repair shop!"
Her: "Well, you're the one that picked it!"
Accountability for one's choices is a hell of a concept to try and convince adults they should accept.
