MAG DFI Class & USCCA Expo 2022
« on: November 11, 2022, 07:12:19 AM »
I'm on another gun toting adventure on the mainland to attend Massad Ayoob's Deadly Force Instructor (DFI) class on self-defense law in Pittsburgh, PA and theUS Concealed Carry Assoc USCCA Expo in Dallas Texas this weekend.  I actually finished the DFI class on Wednesday with team Hawaii and will do a review on the class this weekend.  I'm attending the USCCA seminars and expo at the DFW Convention Center today.  Nothing like thunderstorms to start the morning off.  Sipping my Hibiscus tea and eating my corned beef hash at Yolk as I write this.

Yesterday I attended a few seminars.  Countering the Mass Shooter Threat was the most informative of them dealing with active shooters at Sandy Hook at more recent ones.  Basically that mass shootings weren't a happening prior to Sandy Hook and that the growth in social media correlates to the increase in mass shootings.  Also the problems and remedies to prevent mass shootings such securing school doors, having armed security, and having a fight back attitude.  One particular thing I found interesting is that Kansas has a law for the past 10 years which bans guns in government buildings if they have screening and armed security.  This is something I've been proposing for the sensitive places bills.

Other seminars I attended was Battling Your Bias and Freedom: The Underlying Reason We Carry, basically working with others on the 2A despite differences in race or political ideologies.  And to be careful of topics you bring up with others when discussing the 2A such as when discussing freedoms when the declaration of independence and constitution were written, be aware that blacks were still enslaved and some people will still take offense to this.

The Expo also has simunitions training.  I was supposed to take the Active Shooter Survival training, but it was overbooked so I got refunded my money.  My friend attended it and enjoyed it.  They geared up in simunitions PPE and faced opponents in active shooter scenarios and practiced tactics like moving to cover

Kansas HB2052 - government buildings prohibiting guns need to have screening and armed security

Michael Martin, President of USCCA

I'll use this for my sensitive places testimony

I love that sensitive places sign.  :shaka:

Part time Governor

The bill currently sits in the house. Green says he’ll continue his work as a physician.

Well, if I ever meet Dr. Green out in the streets I'll say to him: "Hello.  I hear you are Hawaii's HALF-ASS GOVERNOR.  Congratulations......."

I did 2 seminars today.  The first was from Sig Sauer Academy, who appears to be the largest sponsor of the expo this year.  It was on how to find the dot on pistol mounted optics.  As shown in the picture, you have a properly fitted gun, have a good natural point of aim, and using a Laser pistol with taped over opitics dry fire practice at a 8" circle at 5 yards repeatedly until you can reliably hit inside of the circle with the laser without using the sights.  Then try it drawing from a holster.  This would take a couple hundred repetitions.  Then uncover the sights, then do it live fire.

The other seminar was a simunitions training on Intruder Awareness and Church Security.  It was hosted by Point Blank who travel across the nation training church security personnel.  We geared up in PPE and assigned roles of church security, CCW carriers, and opponents.  We went through a few scenarios with an active shooter, crazy lady stabbing, and protestors.  Church security would be looking for threats and the first to respond with physical or deadly force.  The rest of the congregation would throw things at the active shooter, whatever was available which in this case was practice tennis balls, and provide additional support.  There were twists to scenarios where we'd be distracted by an incident and an active shooter would pop up from the congregation unnoticed.  Or CCW carriers and police would react in a congregation and we don't know who's who.  So training and rehearsals are important to have prior to an incident happening at church or any event.

Just have to know what events are happening on the mainland and tie it into an existing trip.  Going to the USCCA expo was a tag on for my DFI class.

Agree that it is important to train to recognize the good guys and the bad guys while all hell is breaking loose.

I'm glad there are training available for Churches and the like.

The Expo portion of the show was a bit light compared to NRA or Shot Show, about 25% of the size of NRA, or 15% the size of SHOT Show.  Sig Sauer and Daniel Defense seemed to be the largest sponsors of the USCCA Expo as they had the largest booths.  Both were absent from the NRA Annual Meeting back in May due to Uvalde shooting,  so I guess they are making up for it here.  The expo was focused on self-defense:  guns, accessories, and training.  So no hunting gear or skeet/trap, or retailer stuff here.

Expo was about the size of the Hawaii Convention Center main floor, a bit light on the attendance.

USCCA was selling their warez.  They package it like a club membership where the self-defense insurance is a benefit of membership along with their online and in-person training.

They brought in a portable live-fire shooting range so you could test fire different types of guns.

They had some training seminars on the expo floor.

The National Assoc for Gun Rights (NAGR) was there.  They filed the magazine and assault pistol lawsuits in Hawaii and other states.

This was interesting, a quick access car mount for your handgun.  Not currently legal to keep a gun in your car in Hawaii until we get rid of place to keep or have open carry permits.  An alternative is some people will screw in a safariland QLS mount under the dash so you can clip in your entire holster while you're in the car, then unclip the holster and put it in your belt when you get out.

Safety sashes to clearly identify you in a shooting incident and avoid friendly fire.  You wear a pouch on your belt and quickly remove and wear the sash.  Mostly for security and police, but they have a armed citizen one too.   Useful for church security.

SIG makes the new army machine gun now.  This was unbelievably light compared to the current M240 (24lbs), about half the weight or less.  Feels lighter than the M249 too.

Overall, the USCCA expo is more self-defense training focused.  You go to it for the training workshops and seminars, and the expo is a secondary thing.  This is different from the NRA Annual Meetings and SHOT Show where the Expo is the highlight of the event, but there's also workshops and entertainment.  The USCCA expo was a lot smaller than I expected and attendance was very light.  It seemed like USCCA was expecting more people to attend.  Most of the seminars were basic stuff.  The highlight for me was the Force on Force training with the simulators and simunitions, that's something most people never get to experience.  If you've never done that stuff before, it's an eye opening experience and shows your severe lack of tactical training when it comes to self-defense incidents no matter how well a person can shoot.

USCCA Expo is a good side trip to add on to your vacation or another training class on the mainland.  You could do everything in a full day or day and a half.  It's a good event to bring the family to.  It's a good event for self-defense beginners, and for the intermediate trained people that haven't done force on force training.  For the advanced level CCW carriers who have attended other expo's, you might not get anything out of it.

The Dallas Fort Worth Convention Center Area was a nice place that was like downtown just a lot larger.  It was uncommon to see homeless people around and it was relatively clean, the city must push them out to the outskirts somewhere.  Lots of good eating places and bars around.  Not much to do within walking distance, but there is a rail system if you want to go elsewhere or to the airport.  I didn't see any 30.06 signs banning carry in stores, and the restaurants I went to didn't have the 51% alcohol signs which ban carry inside.

The Water Garden was right next to the convention center, not sure what it's significance is, but it was cool to see.

JFK memorial.  He was assassinated in Dallas.

I tried removing the mag sidecar from my IWB holster and wearing it around town.  It was a bit more comfortable to wear like this as it's a narrower profile so you can adjust where it's placed on the waist and you don't have a mag rubbing on your skin.  Also easier to use the restroom while still wearing it.
