There are laws protecting the tax payers from politicians squandering our money by allowing workers to take more time off than allowed.

I imagine the rules for state employees are similar to federal.

offices I worked in required all kinds of approvals and budget changes to allow civilian employees to take an extra holiday.  More often than not, it was taken as a "liberal" day of leave, or you only got the last 2 hours of the day off. 

Giving a whole day was normally done when the holiday was adjacent to a weekday.  Christmas this year is on a Sunday, so Christmas Eve is Saturday.  There's no rationale for giving Friday off, too.  Same holds for New Years Day on Sunday.

My company modified our holiday schedule to allow 2 "floating" holidays that could be taken whenever you wished, but they had to be either in conjunction with a holiday (like the day after Thanksgiving), a nonstandard holiday (like a Jewish or Muslim holiday), or a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, etc.)  this way, you could take a day off before or after New Years Day without taking a vacation day.

Whether it's legal or bending the rules, it doesn't make all the people not working for the government happy.  Why do they get a paid vacation day when the rest of the people paying their salaries do not?

We have seen how this and the prior admin treated laws/rules during covid shutdowns. Then add in their attitude toward the constitution. This goes more to show that they can do what ever they want.

From what i've seen, the Hawaii offices dealing with services like SNAP/EBT and other benefits are backlogged to the tune of 30-90 days.  People who renewed their food assistance applications periodically as required are having their benefits terminated until they call to pester the case workers -- and then it takes another week or two to get the applications reviewed and their benefits restored.

If the state can't handle the existing workload so as to not cause hardships for the people in need of benefits, maybe they need to rethink giving state employees even more time off for the holidays?
