I stumbled across the TNT TV Series The Last Ship about a week ago while browsing HULU.  It kind of had a 24 meets Outbreak with JAG as a backdrop.

I seem to remember seeing the promo spots, but never watched it before.  It aired 2013-2018.

The fact that it began with one Navy ship, the Nathan James, helping a couple of scientists look for a cure to a new flu strain that was ramping up to a full-blown pandemic was prophetic.  They needed the Primordial strain of the virus before it became the mutation they were facing in order to find a cure.  Turned out a jerk of a science student spliced his own DNA into the virus to find a cure, which created a resilient strain and made him a carrier.  Everywhere he went, people became infected, and 80% died.

Throughout the series, there were Russians, Chinese, Vietnamese and Columbian bad guys getting in their way and trying to sink the destroyer. 

Russians wanted to get the cure first so they could control the world. 

China created a powder/gas they could rain on whole countries making them resistant to the cure, thereby killing their neighbors in Asia via viral genocide.  In the process, it turned Asian countries against the US for delivering a cure that was not working. 

One Columbian took over his country and tried to invade all of South, Central and North America through military occupation by first trying to destroy the US Navy Fleet.

There were many other skirmishes, such as a maniacal leader in Baltimore who chose who lived or died, burning the bodies of the dead to run the coal fired power plant.  The leader just happened to be the mother of one of the Nathan James' crew.

All in all, the writing was great, the acting was exceptional, and the special effects were nearly perfect.  I can't believe I didn't watch it when it was on TV, but that was the time I was not only cutting the cord with cable TV, but I also made myself watch much less TV, picking no more than one program per day on average.  Some nights i watched 2, and didn't watch any at other times.

Anyone else watch The Last Ship?  After going through the COVID pandemic, the storyline hit very close to reality.  Many of the situations reminded me of things The Walking Dead groups had to survive -- other than the dead trying to kill everyone.
