IMO ...

If a VA doctor -- or any civilian doctor -- thinks someone is a danger to himself or others, that's one thing.  There should be a process to further evaluate and treat the patient before letting them back out on the street.

Short of that, it's not a doctor's job to tell the government if a patient who might own a firearm is being treated for anything short of a severe mental illness or disease.   Once the treatment succeeds, there also needs to be a process to reinstate their 2A rights similar to getting that clearance letter for HPD permits to acquire.

HPD just had to update their policies to issue permits in spite of medical record information being sent to them which was being used in a similar fashion, IIRC.  That's why they now want a medical professional's full mental health evaluation -- just being counseled after having liposuction or being treated for minor depression over losing a relative isn't grounds for denial any longer.

Social Security beneficiaries were dealing with this, too.  Once they agreed to have someone manage their money, they were labeled incompetent and barred from having firearms.

I know a certain person who can't form an intelligible sentence but has access to nuclear weapons....
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
