Want to buy a micro 9MM soon. Is the Sig P365 reliable?
« on: September 20, 2023, 09:05:36 AM »
I wanted to get a small 9MM for a while now and with the new regulations coming Jan 1, decided to get one before the end of this month.
Yesterday I looked at and dry fired an Sig P365, a Glock 43 and a Hellcat.  I liked the grip, ammo capacity and how the Sig felt the best of the 3.
I then looked at reviews of the Sig P365 online and there was quite a bit of negativity about the firing pin.
I have always liked Glocks because of their extreme reliability, but how they feel in my hand is just ok.
So for those of you that own or have a lot of knowledge about the P365, is the firing pin breaking or light striking a problem?
Is there another micro 9MM that I should look at?  I don’t want to spend more than $700.

365x is what I carry daily, nothing bad to say about it

I have the P365 and the Hellcat
I like the Hellcat better, trigger feels better to me. ejecting the mag feels better, just falls free easier without me having to move my hand as much. but being a micro compact I realize that I might have to adjust my hand more than a bigger pistol. but really not a big thing
I decided to use the P365 for carry bc of versatility. I have 2 slides for it: 1 with a Holosun 507k, and 1 with just the iron night sights. so I can switch back and forth as needed without having to take off the red dot, just switch the slides
never had a light strike with the P365.  and I really haven't shot it a whole lot to test the durability of the firing pin
I use my G19 for carry also. can't go wrong with a Glock. although I wind up carrying the Sig a lot more bc its smaller, easier to conceal

I had no malfunctions with over 1400rds thru my p365.  I converted it to a 365X and have much better recoil control with the larger grip module (i.e. faster follow-up sight picture and subsequent shots).  Printing is not too much of an issue as its very slim.

I thought they manufacturer addressed the striker drag issue on earlier models.  I never noticed any striker drag on inspecting fired casings.

I was looking for a CCW gun for HI.

The 3 choices were:

SIG P365X

Pros
Looks cool
Plenty of parts and holsters
Shot slightly more accurate of the other chocies. at 10 yards, IIRC, time size grouping with RDS and moderate speed of firing.
I like the flat trigger, I hate the curved trigger on the 365
No firing issues
This is my wifes CCW EDC

Cons
Price, most expensive of the 3
Angle is different compared to other guns, but it's learnable. Barrel points slightly downward more.

G43X

Pros
Price
Parts and hoslters available

Cons
Trigger sucks
Iron sights suck

S&W Shield Plus

Pros
Price
Grip texture is aggresive, as I get sweaty palms
Trigger is best of the 3 choices
Moderate holster choices.  Still a lot, but not as ,much compared to the other 2. But it really didn't matter as I went with Phlster and Tier1 Concealed
10 yard grouping was nickle size with RDS and moderate rate of fire. I did this and the P365X at the same time in Vegas.

Cons
Looks the least tacticool of the 3

I chose the Shield Plus in the end.

I own and have carried a 43x with EPS Carry.  Love that gun, though my personal preference for CCW is a Glock 17.  I have close to 2k with the 43x and no failures.  The grip is laser stippled and have trigger guard undercut and texture.  I also have an Overwatch trigger.  So not close to the cost of the base gun.

I have shot prob over 2k on P365 and P365XL, both with irons and RDS.  I've heard some issues with early models, including one 2a member's gun.  From what I've read or watched on YT, seems like the issues with the 365 platform has been addressed.  To the point where maybe the P365 gets "improved" as things go and replaces the P320 series.

Overall, recommend you (or anyone) try for yourself.  The ergos/feel between the 43x and P365 is pretty distinct.  Overall, I would say nothing wrong wtih the P365, but just decided early on to go with the 43x and just stuck with it.  Especially after I invested in holsters, mags, etc.

Thanks for the replies.  I am going to see if I can find a Shield Plus, P365X and a G43X to handle in person.

I can wait until the end of November if need be.  I don’t have a HI CC permit and not going to the mainland any time soon.

I won’t apply for a HI County CC permit until their Privacy requirement gets overturned.

I own a P365 and have fired close to 500 rounds through it.  I have yet to see or experience any striker drag on the casings nor have I experienced any malfunctions.  Maybe I have a model where SIG addressed the striker drag issue, not sure.  I bought my P365 in 2021.

However, I did have a failure to fire issue last year, around this time.  I contacted SIG and decided to send the gun in for inspection and repair.  The rep that I talked to on the phone mentioned that it seemed I was overzealous in lubing the gun and probably the excess lube ended up in the striker chamber and is affecting the operation of the striker system.  He told me to check it out and dry out the striker chamber for he's pretty sure that is the problem.  I told him I'm not confident enough to play around in that area and he said no problem, send it in and they will look at it.

Sure enough, when the gun came back the report analysis said there was lube in the striker chamber and that the chamber should be completely dry and free of lube for it to work properly.

Otherwise the gun works perfect.  Just gotta avoid the striker area when lubing.

And although I don't have a CCW, if I do decide to get a permit this is the gun I will carry.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

As far as timing goes, it might be beneficial not to wait on the CC law changes before buying.  At some point you'll be carrying, and in the interim you'll have time to practice with your new pistol.  You'll also have time to shop for holsters, mags and other accessories.  Until you make the gun purchase, you won't know what else to shop for.

Also, unless you find a good deal somewhere, the prices will normally go up, especially for popular guns in high demand.  If nothing else, inflation will be a factor.

Just throwing that out there.  I've purchased a few pistols that went on sale as soon as they came out and were available on island, like the Sig P320 and S&W M&P 2.0.  Had I waited, I would have paid way more.

Good luck.

I am going to buy one very soon, certainly before the end of November.   The only reason I would wait and not buy one next week is if the gun shop had a model I am interested in coming in shortly.

J Hara on the BI has a G43X MOS in stock for $570.

Tokunagas in Hilo has the G43 for $499 and the P365 for $560.  These prices are higher than what I see most gun shops on the mainland selling them for, but if you figure in shipping and FFL charges then I guess they aren't that bad.

When I was looking for a CCW gun on Oahu in end of 2022; the G43X with new irons and trigger came out the same price as a P365X. Which is why I went with the Shield Plus, no need change irons or trigger. It's optics ready and you can keep ur irons. Which means also no need supressor sights. The P365X, you lose your rear sight totally.

Depending on the rds you use since the 365x also optics ready…I run the holosun 407k with the integrated backup rear iron sight. Came in handy when I took my ccw course as I actually tried to mimic a failed rds by not even turning it on.

At the end of the day it’s all personal preference cohs I prefer almost everything about the 365x over Shield plus in terms of a micro 9mm.

Correct, both the 407K and 507K have a rear notch to mimic a rear sight. I got the 507K on my Shield Plus and Mrs. CMO has the 407K on her P365X.  This was 1 reason why I like the 407/507K, no need buy supressor height sights.

But a built in notch really isn't neccessary. I've taken skill builders where we mimiced broken sights and used other means as a point of aim. Like the side of the slide on  a pistol.  You not gonna get nickel grouping, but at least you will be on paper at 10 yards. We did the same with rifle red dot/back up iron malfunction drills in another skill builder.

The 365X picture on Sig’s website looks like it retains the rear site now. I lost my rear site when I mounted a RDS on my version but I eventually replaced the factory slide later.

For my EDC, i currently have my P365XL configured as a P365X.  When i qualified, it was a P365XL.  My permit says 9MM Sig with an FCU s/n.  I can change around and have...P365X, XL and X-Macro.  I like the size of the "X" But love the capacity of the X-Macro.  When i was in Vegas Recently, used my 17+3 Mags....with my X-Macro's.

BTW i also own a Glock 43X but it's currently "sidelined" with a problem that will be solved shortly.

Good Luck with what you choose.  All good guns!

How much did you pay for it? I pretty much decided to get a P365X, but might have to order it.

None in stock Hilo side of the BI that I know of.
