There was an actual case in which a woman did try to sue her sperm donor. She lost the case since
the state in which the child was conceived had laws that protected the sperm donor from her claims.
She tried suing from another state but lost.
I say to all of you: Protect your precious bodily fluids.

A Kansas sperm donor caught in the middle of a child support case says he wanted
to help a lesbian couple when he made the donation nearly five years ago.

Instead, he may end up paying for his action.

A judge ruled that William Marotta must pay child support, even though he says he
signed documents waiving his parental rights.

Shawnee County District Court Judge Mary Mattivi said on Wednesday that Marotta
failed to conform to Kansas law, which says a licensed physician must be involved in
an artificial insemination process, court documents show.

The documents show that the lesbian couple whom Marotta helped conceive a child
say they performed the artificial insemination procedure at home.

Binging 1980s episodes of LA Law.

One episode was about a divorced couple who had fertilized embryos frozen for later implanting in the wife.

Five years after the divorce, the ex-wife decided to have a child and the ex-husband found out she planned to use one of the frozen embryos.

In CA at the time, if the mother could identify the father, she could have the courts legally force him to pay child support regardless of the means of fertilization.

This is why basically all sperm banks protect the identity of their clients.  If the mother can't find the father, she can't sue for support.

Many states have implemented laws to protect fathers who donated their sperm to a sperm bank from child support claims.  The OP's plaintiff found a loophole.  The insemination had to be performed by a licensed doctor.  I guess that's to overcome the burden of proving the pregnancy resulted from artificial means versus intercourse. 

People seem to have a knack of creating more problems for society while trying to solve others. Another example where the person most at risk needs to read all the fine print and hire an attorney before doing anything to help others.
