Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against
U.S. president-elect Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump's
return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him
for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

They requested that they be allowed to continue prosecuting the two codefendants in the classified documents case: Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira.

I think after another 4 years in office, none of these cases will be picked up again -- they were to be dismissed without prejudice, meaning there's no double-jeopardy attached.  Trump can't run again, so going after him then makes little sense. 

If anybody tries to go after Trump in 4 years, the next president (Vance?) needs to pull a Gerald Ford and pardon Trump from any further federal charges -- just like Ford did when Nixon resigned.

If they do try after he leaves office, Trump needs to simply walk into the interviews and say, "I can't recall."  it's the Biden defense!

Given his age and the fact he wont be in the position to run again I doubt they will pick up the case again. Maybe if he somehow gets impeached again but short of that I doubt it.

In declining to prosecute Biden, Hur’s office also cited what it said was
Biden’s “limited memory” both during his 2017 recorded conversations
with the ghostwriter and in an interview with investigators last year.

evidentiary weight on a single eight-word utterance to his ghostwriter
about finding classified documents in Virginia, in the absence of other,
more direct evidence.”

himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic,
well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” investigators wrote.
