The badge, radio, and other items have been recovered, but the firearm remains missing.

"Equipment" (translation: firearm) stolen twice and an unattended rifle incident that ended in someone killed.

Definitely not Honolulu's Finest.

This is why even though we legally can leave a handgun in the car, I don't do it.  Esp since HI's process to buy a new one is so long.

Why on Earth doesn't HPD practice SAFE STORAGE?

OMG!!!

How Can the Legislature GO AFTER US LEGAL GUN OWNERS when HPD has their own offcers NOT taking care of their Equipment?

Did you know the POLICE Radio alone to replace is OVER 4K?

Hmmm

Well they did get back some of the property.  But NOT the firearm....Here comes the "PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS OFFICE" aka Internal Affairs....

it's not just the cost of the radio.  it's the damage a radio can do in the hands of a criminal who monitors police dispatches and responses.  luckily the radio was recovered, but in the digital age, having encrypted comms is essential to operations, and any eavesdropping means your actions are a step behind the crooks.

i sill find it crazy that anyone is brazen enough to take law enforcement equipment like this.  Of course, the judicial system would let them off with community service and a small fine, so there's that "deterrence".

Kau said it is unlikely that the officer — or HPD as a whole — would be held responsible if the weapon was used in a crime.

“It’s not likely that the department or the officer could be held liable,” Kau said. “It’s because HPD has been put on notice that the firearm is missing. And so anything that happens from here on out is not the responsibility of the officer or HPD.”

Anyone remember the case where a Joe CItizen had his firearm stolen from his vehicle at a shopping center, reported it and got arrested?
