Mmm...I've done that before in various parts of the country, because as most know 'locals' look hispanic or native in parts of the mainland US.

But unfortunately, NY has a stop and identify law.  So depending on the situation (and how far they want to push it), doing so could mean you're temporarily detained or arrested until indentified. Probably be easier to just show your ID and be on your way in places with these statutes.

I know what you mean...every time I've been stopped for ID, I get the thought of the Gestapo saying "your papers please". It's an invasive law, but one needs to be careful not to take it lightly and push too far. A tightly wound LEO might return the 'fun' with an obstruction charge.
