In case of evacuation
« on: February 16, 2013, 12:57:16 AM »
Just wondering what people's plans for their guns are in case of a hurricane or Tsunami evacuation.  Especially people who have a largish collection.  Do you take your guns with you?  Bag them in water tight bags and leave them locked in the safe?  Stay with them?  How about the Ammo?

Depending on the destination, you usually don't/can't take them with you. Evacuation centers/shelters do not allow weapons. So unless you're planning to stay with family or a friend, you're better off leaving them secured at home. It's much safer there than in your car. If you don't have a waterproof safe, you can bag everything (if you want), but that's no guarantee. Just remember that's what homeowners/renters insurance is for.

As for what I'd do? I'd leave everything in place...all my safes are waterproof.

I decided a long time ago that my gun collection is the least of my worries if a really bad situation occurs.  More important is family and ID records and some liquid assets I keep around.

I will take one "affordable" gun with me --affordable in the sense that I can afford to let it go at any shelters, hopefully by getting a receipt for it.

I have two bugout bags, one with food, underwear, socks, aspirin and the like, and other necessities for three or four days, along with some barter goods like a carton of generic cigarettes and even though I don't drink, I was thinking of sticking a pint or two of whiskey in there.

Also included is a compass, signal mirror, first aid kit, P-38 can opener, other survival stuff --like a non-intimidating knife, you know.

The other (empty) bag is for running around the house and collecting the valuables mentioned above --hopefully, I'll be able to do this.  I keep my Amateur Radio Handi-Talkie pretty much fully charged because the local repeater is up in the mountains and is solar powered.  This, in case the cell phone network crashes.

I've got other stuff in the car, road flares, water, etc.

All in all, a "layered" approach, but with my valuable and precious guns only a tertiary concern.

In case of a building emergency, the guns go out the window to the lawn below.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

My guns are already in those blue bags from Corrosion Cops for rust protection purposes. As for taking my guns with me, it depends where I'm going.

Someone else's house - Throw em all in my truck and take em with me. I can count the number of guns I have on one hand so it's no big thing to take em all.

Gotta go to a shelter - Leave rifles and shotgun at home. Take handguns (I only have 2).

As we on an island and I'm pretty high up I wouldn't be evacuating.  That being said probably just take a handgun, a rifle, and ammo.

i got a fanny pack rig (i mean, i have a friend who has a fanny pack)
and some airsoft type chest rigs and shoulder bags (i mean, i hear you could use airsoft gear to transport firearms)
shotgun could go in soft rifle case, or for the low pro look, a nylon case for those folding chairs
(i mean, i hear you could transport a shotgun in a folding chair case)

i think its important to keep track of them at least, supposing a katrina like situation happens.

i wasnt talking as much about the confiscations, as the fact that looters and predators take advantage of chaos and that it's the likeliest scenario in hawaii where i think one would need to defend themselves against multiple people.

but yeah, good point about the confiscations.
