I have all of my longarms and about half of my handguns stored in silicon-impregnated fabric socks.  Not only do I have no issues with rust, it keeps the guns from banging against each other in a seriously overcrowded safe.

+1 works well for me and i live deeep in palolo valley with 60-80% humidity on the regular.

i bought a couple cheapy socks from various places on the net, but i find the thicker polyester ones to be the best. they are more durable and less breathable than the cotton variety. i can see the cotton type failing because not only is it breathable, when you stretch it you can see right through it because its thin and has too much built in elastic. the polyester are harder to fit on the gun but provide more cushioned padding for when rifles bump.

i got a 6pack of long rifle socks for about 20 bucks off of midway. good deals. i think i paid like 7 each for 2 tiny pistol socks from the last local gunshow.


heres a little tip i learned,  as im sliding the sock down i massage the barrel and receiver lightly so the sock wipes down any fingerprints that were put on from handling before storage.

Yeah, it was my understanding that the treatment/impregnation (is that even a word?) of the sock is the key.  I have one for a long gun that I rarely shoot and no problems with rust.  That said, I don't have any problems with rust on any of my guns.  I keep them in a gun cabinet and have a large packet of DampRid in there to keep the humidity down.  All of my firearms are relatively new (1990's until now) and no neat stuff like case hardening or other rust sensitive finishes.
