And where did the bad people who did the shooting get most of their guns? Were those gun show “loopholes” responsible? Nope. According to surveys DOJ conducted of state prison inmates during 2004 (the most recent year of data available), only two percent who owned a gun at the time of their offense bought it at either a gun show or flea market. About 10 percent said they purchased their gun from a retail shop or pawnshop, 37 percent obtained it from family or friends, and another 40 percent obtained it from an illegal source.

37% from family or friends is actually support for the idea of forcing background checks on private sales. :/

Great article, though. I've hammered on those statistics with my anti-gun friends: we are already far safer from gun related violence (and other forms of crime) than we have been for a long time. They still point to the mass shootings as some kind of evidence that something needs to be done but then I just calmly ask them "Ok, what should be done? What would actually prevent random acts of violence like that?"

Invariably they point to Australia. I then point out that while it worked for Australia such a solution has already been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. That usually gets us back to "But something has to be done!" and me patiently waiting for them to suggest something effective, restrictive and constitutional. Haven't heard one yet.
