Honolulu Firearms has an indoor range and you can bring your own gun (need to bring registration with you)...the catch, you HAVE to purchase ammo from them.

Can any indoor range in Hawaii afford the insurance for it to be otherwise? How else would they know if you are using reloads or not.

that's what i head when i talked to the guys a few weeks back. wondering if anyone has any news on OGCs range or new location. i was so stoked when i heard they were opening a range because i live like 5min away. i hope they'll somehow manage to get past the zoning and open it at their current location.

Cant wait til anyone opens an indoor range where you can shoot your own ammo.  Also hope its at least 75 feet.

That would be nice but realistically with land costs, environmental concerns, litigation, etc. it really won't happen.  The alternative would be the range would need to charge really high rates in order to recover costs and turn a reasonable profit.

From looking at the business models that some investors once entertained... Ammo, accessories and refreshment sales are key income items above range and membership fees.

The big issue on using outside ammo  or reloads is based not just on income, but also on the rating of the traps and the liability when someone's hot reloads go boom...You also have to make sure frang is being shot when required and not FMJ.

^^^Something some people don't realize is pressure from rounds.  Wrong cartridges can mean the lighting gets blown out.  If the lighting is flourescent then you are dealing with mercury.  Just lots of little stuff to consider.

One thing to contemplate ... rather than a range open to the public, why not a shooting club?  Dues, training classes (state required hunting, pistol and advanced), private lessons, special events, gun rentals, ammo sales, shooting supplies, targets, a nice snack bar where you can watch the shooters behind safety glass or on closed circuit monitors, and, or course, competition leagues.

Having a club versus a public enterprise would help support the place with dues, sales, and event fees.  It also might help insurance cost if more serious shooters frequent the club versus the "public range" crowd who just go to blast the sides of the crater and make loud noises.

Just brainstorming out loud.  I would think a more up-scale range would do well.  There are many who don't go to Koko Head because it's outdoors, dirty, run down (although getting a face lift now), etc.
When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state".

i believe that's what carter had planned for the OGC range- members only, guests need to be cleared

We've had shooting clubs in the past that have not made it.  IMHO to make this work without having extremely high costs, you need tourists.  The only real successful ranges on Oahu are those that cater to tourists.  If it was profitable to allow the local users, it would have happened (and continued) by now.

With regards to me visiting Kokohead the primary reasons;
1. Space - oftentimes there is none.  This is not helped by people who camp out and do not send that many rounds downrange.
2. Safety - it can get spooky sometimes when you watch the people out there.
