Prices for ammo online, shipped. Anyone have experience ordering? (Read 5974 times)

Anyone ever order ammo online? I used to think the shipping costs for the hazardous material category made it completely unreasonable but with prices now I just calculated the costs for various calibers from a few sites and came up with this.

Russian 5.45x39 1080rd Can    $0.18/rd   [$189.95] + $131.63 S&H = $0.29/round

Freedom Munitions 40 S&W 180 gr. RNFP Remanufactured Box of 500 13 hours ago    $0.36/rd   [$182.09] + $60.19 S&H = $0.48/round

ATI 7.62x39mm 124gr 100rd Battle Pack 3 hours ago    $0.30/rd   [$29.99] + $44.00 S&H = $0.73/round (drops to about $0.50/rd at 500rds)

most of the other calibers are either out of stock or cost too much so i didn't bother posting that info. I was surprised at how cheap some of these are though.

Looking at just one comparison point, OGC has .40 S&W 180gr 650/case.  Price for one case is $249, but $219 for two or more cases.

At $249 for one case, and adding $11.73 tax, total cost is $260.73.  Price per round = $0.40 compared to your $0.48/round.

And at the discounted cost of $219 * 2 / 1300, it changes to $458.64 / 1,300 = $0.35/round

I have ordered a fair bit of ammo online. Cmp offers reasonable shipping, and I can get .30-06 delivered to my door for $0.64/round.

I also have a friend who ships ammo in by the pallet and lets me ship other orders to his freight forwarder. I don't do that ofter, not wanting to exploit his offer, but have used that to bring in things that aren't available locally (8x56r), or that are just overpriced when they are (.357 158gr lswc). And for ordering very old surplus ammo (8mm Mauser, Turkish production from 1932.)

But for "normal" cartridges of contemporary production, watching the sales at the LGSs is really every bit as cost effective.

The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Hmmm, close but not quite...Those were work chinks autographed by Ty Murray that I was getting re-framed. I've never worn them.

And FYI: All chaps are "assless".

Ordered .22 ammo from the CMP. It is a bit of a hassle to get your paperwork done. But once done it is easy to re-order. Shipping is very reasonable. They charge $40 for shipping 5k rounds of .22 to Hawaii. They are currently 6mos to 12mos out on .22 ammo.
