And, as always, I find it fascinating that these folks are now standing in the same space as the medical marijuana folks in CA and HI: The local cops say its OK but the fed can (and will) still bust you for it.

Maybe it is part of the plan.  A perfect excuse for the expansion of the Federal Gov't.  They are thinking that since the States won't enforce Fed law, then why not expand the reach of Fed and do it for them?  there is little the states can do.  Just ask Roger Christie.
