Even though I had predicted that would happen to Snoke, it's still nice to see a movie do something that seems to go against planned destiny. Like for example when Anakin jumps from the car in Episode 2, I think "haha what if he just fell down and died right there." Or in Episode 2, "what if a random stormtrooper shot Luke while they were in the death star." Someone should make a funny collection of bad ending skits like that for movies.

My guess is that the mirror thing was some sort of poorly explained Jedi trial from Star Wars extended universe lore, like Luke's "failure at the cave."

Luke croaked because he pooped himself out. It was depicted clearly enough to me. You don't want it to be too obvious because then it wouldn't be a surprise and it would be embarrassing.

I read that they consider this trilogy to be the end of the Skywalker saga or something, so Kylo will have to die in the last movie. But for the time being a Skywalker finally rules the galaxy so I will cheer for the rebellion to be crushed once and for all in the finale.

Ask and you shall receive.

The reason you guys don't like it is because it's Democratic Party propaganda and was created to appeal to a different audience.

Empire is Republican Party. Snoke is Bush/Cheney dynasty. The red guard are the 2016 Republican candidates. Kylo is Trump. Notice how they make fun of his appearance with his goofy "helmet". Now in the Resistance we have Poe who represents Bernie and Leia/Holdo as Donna Brazile and Debbie Wasserman Schultz respectively. Or maybe Leia is Hillary. Rey could be either Hillary or the "good and pure" Democratic voter who didn't get distracted by their party's corruption and incompetence.

The message in this film is straight from the Hollywood elite. Bernie spoiled the election and everyone who doesn't want the world to be run by evil selfish pricks should get behind the DNC despite all the *ahem* ethical concerns.

That's rather interesting.  The story was already written, pre-production photography was done in Sept 2015, and the primary photography was completed in July 2016.

If you think they knew in advance Trump was running, would win the nomination, would become President, and all the other election players were predicted long before any of it happened, then I guess your description of the Evil Republican Empire under Kylo-Trump is sound.

Since Hillary was predicted to win in 2016, wouldn't the story be more likely to represent HER administration as the Evil Empire, and therefore the Democrats as the dark side?

Quote
The film was announced after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. It is produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy
and Ram Bergman, with Force Awakens director J. J. Abrams acting as an executive producer. John Williams, composer for the previous
seven films, returns to compose the score. Scenes that required shooting at Skellig Michael in Ireland were filmed during pre-production
in September 2015, with principal photography beginning at Pinewood Studios in England in February 2016 and ending in July 2016.
Post-production wrapped in September 2017.[6]

That's a good point about the production timeline. On the other hand our elections have turned into reality shows, so in that respect it's difficult to determine what is scripted and what is coincidence. The rise of Trump seemed to catch a lot of people by surprise, but then again there aren't many anti-Trump 1%ers who have pledged to donate their tax cut to good causes. They could all be high-fiving and blowing each other kisses behind closed doors and we would never be the wiser.

I'm not the first to confuse Galactic Empire values with the neoconservative/neoliberal movement, though. They actually went there first.

Now that I think about it more this is kind of how fans would react if the Alliance got wiped out instead of escaping to spread more Hope and Change across the galaxy...

I love that clip, btw. Always makes me happy to play it especially after dealing with Astroturf Idealists.

Could it be that Hollywood wrote a Hollywood ending where the Liberals win, but instead it actually predicted their downfall and exposure of their deepest darkest secrets? If so it's possible the trend goes back years. Jabba The Hut was introduced in 1983 just as Weinstein was getting started as a producer, but the culture of the casting couch goes back probably to the beginning of cinema. Now those two faces are forever linked and the Los Angeles career-for-rape institution is getting chucked down the Sarlacc hole.

You have to admit there are some interesting parallels.

I read that the story was a moral for Millennials to not run into a situation in haste and instead look at the long term plans. Still doesn't forgive the First Order's lack of foresight into hyperspacing in front of the Resistance fleet. It would make more sense if the capital ship had something that the FO really needed and couldn't risk blowing up.
