Isn't just us.
I was talking to my cousin in Idaho.
They are ALL out. Unless you have a
non-standard eg 7.63X25 mm.
(C96 Mauser)
regular stuff can't be found unless people are
selling their private stash.

On another forum it was reported that Vista's backorders would probably take more than a year to fill.

New gun owners also would reluctantly pay these prices to obtain ammo for their new purchase(s).  One could argue that they would fall under the "didn't prepare" category.

At this point new gun owners have no choice and just hope they can stumble across some good prices.

Yeah, new shooters too
Speaking of new shooters, had 1 next to me recently shooting a LCR 38sp. I saw him shoot for 1 hour and not 1 hit on the target. IMO, seemed like he just needed to relax and release the death grip, although for a new shooter the LCR is not easy to shoot

Now that you mentioned this, I am guilty of not preparing enough as far as acquiring ammo for my SW29.  I did some extensive shooting earlier before the covid thing and never bothered to restock significantly enough for situations we now find ourselves under with shortages, etc.

I haven't shot the revolver in like years, so I was missing the target embarrassingly.  I needed to relearn how to grip, relax, etc.  The range officer was watching me and offered some advice.  He said I needed to stop my flinch.

So I downgraded to special ammo to try to relearn and get better.  Then life got in the way and I haven't shot for a while and never bothered to stock up.

Now I'm screwed, lol!  I only got 50 rds of special, no magnum rds, and I don't reload. :(

I haven't bought at those prices, but I got caught in a little bit of an ebb and flow of shooting.  I typically have a good amount of ammo on hand and buy when the stash gets to a certain point and I see good prices.  Before  COVID hit, I had been shooting 9 a lot and was buying often.  But for 5.56/.223, I had been shooting some and had not seen prices in "my range".  However, instead of buying at inflated prices, I've finally started preparing to handload.  Supplies on much of that stuff is also suffering, but I have luckily been able to either find stuff in stock locally and online vendors.

Like I mentioned above, can start a "I'm looking for ______" thread to help each other out.  Since COVID stuff started, I have given ammo to buddies.  I've also traded ammo calibers (calibers that I don't shoot very often for calibers that I do) or have sold at what I bought it for.  I was also talking/texting with a couple of forum members and long time shooters who were also caught short when COVID hit and we were able to get them setup.  In this case, no harm in asking.  I don't have much .357 Mag on hand, but I have a good amount of .38 SPL that I could certainly offer to one of the "good guys".

New shooters would likely pay high prices for ammo if they didn't know how much it cost before and ammo costs relatively little compared to the cost of a gun.  They also tend to buy small quantities.  The regular price for ammo is very low compared to what you're getting:. A well constructed cartridge made of copper, brass, lead, and "explosive" built to tight tolerances.  I'd think a 9mm would regularly cost a dollar or two a round if I was a new shooter.

That is VERY true misconception for new shooters.  I was told a long time ago that the firearm is likely to be the cheapest part of getting into shooting.  That is for those that shoot regularly and not including heirloom or collector level firearms.  Like that Combat Master STI in the classifieds!  Damn AWESOME gun for sure and I would say worth a lot of $$$, but I'd also want to shoot the heck out of it!

That new shooters tend to buy ammo in small quantities is also another that I've observed.  Many friends ask me to go shooting and they are like, can you pick up ammo the day before.  Many view it like preparing for a BBQ, where you pick up stuff a few days before going.

The ammo prices have def saved me money because I'm not gonna get my 1911 in 45 anytime soon.

Gene at HGS got some nice 1911’s in stock for very reasonable prices.
Don’t know about 45 ammo though.
Took mine in to get the trigger swapped out.
Fawk. Shoulda looked at ammo. Think I only got like half a can of 45 left now that I think about it.
Picked Up 17hmr though. Still at pre-panic prices.
He said re-stocking and even his wholesale prices currently suck.
He’s the Man though.

I have 500 rounds of "remanufactured" 45 ammo from Bushido Arms that I picked up a while ago in anticipation of shooting more.   :geekdanc:

The way things are going, dunno how much I will be shooting my 45.   :(

How obscure does stuff have to be to still be in stock at this point?  Is there still .22?  410? or is it pretty much all the weird obsolete surplus rounds at this point?

I've seen .22 lr in stock at a couple of shops.  I saw .22 lr at SEC this past weekend.  I'm planning on hitting up a couple other shops tomorrow for some things.  I'll try to report what I see.  Since you started this thread, are there any particular calibers that you are interested in?

The not wide used ammo thing was a consideration in the ammo rush/shortage in 2012/2013.  For a while, only .40 S&W was available.  .22lr stock took a licking IIRC.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not buying from HGS.

I think shooting is quickly falling outside of my price range regardless of availability unfortunately.  Fortunately I stocked up on mini mags so I'm good for a year or two at my current rate of consumption.  At this point I'm probably just following prices as a spectator sport.

So you're like this

 ;D

I understand regarding the impact of ammo pricing on shooting activities.  For me, I had been shooting a lot of 9 prior to COVID, so I had stocked up.  Then once COVID hit, I wasn't shooting as much.  So I'm hoping that I can continue to shoot a bit until I have to really cut back  5.56.223 is similar, but less of a buffer.  I'll probably cut back on shooting carbine sooner.  I'm also considering picking up a .22 lr rifle to tide me over as well.

Or a 22 AR conversion like the CMMG one. Not very accurate at a distance but good for doing drills at close range

Oh yeah.  I'm down for one of those.  I'm not so concerned about uber accuracy.  Though I have long wanted to get a .22 lr bolt action for challenge for accuracy.
