Was there today, July 16, to apply for a handgun permit at about 12:30. There were two in line and two inside waiting. Put an hour in the meter downstairs and had 26 minutes remaining. Super smooth. THANK YOU to all for posting your experiences and how-to's. This was my first time applying and I learned a lot from this post. One thing I forgot, though, was to have an application for EACH handgun (I had only filled out one application but had two handguns) so I had to redo by hand. All the tips from all of you were right on. I had the exact change (16.50), hunter edu card, and all else required. Again, big MAHALOS to you all! Aloha!

Been 3 times last few weeks.. average wait was 30 minutes. Not bad really. Bring your phone and just zone out IMO.

EDIT: Oh and twice was at the end of day. Seems like they're closing door around 1520-1530 2 times I was there, so if you are running a bit late (e.g. 1505), I'd try anyway; but don't blame me if you get there and it's shut.

I was in and out in 35 minutes today 1330 to 1405. I registered a rifle and filled out the paperwork for a new long gun permit. There where three guys in the room and no line straight to the window I went. When I was leaving the line was to the door.

Dustoff, you must have got there right after I left. There was one guy at the window and three in chairs when I got there. Picked up my new long gun permit and out in 10 minutes. There was one guy with three or four big rifle hard cases waiting when I left.

Classic experience yesterday.
In at 9:30 to pick up permit. 4th in line. Room filled with folks waiting for registrations. In and out in 25 minutes.

Back at 11:00 to register. 2nd in line and only couple guys waiting in the room. In and out in 25 minutes.

Guy behind me has just a small box.
In it he has 20 M-1 Garand receivers.
Needless to say the line starts backing up after him.

Super cool guy, but the moral of the story is beware of guys with small boxes.  ;)
I thanked him for coming in after me.

Hound - don't you mean small "packages"? And, if someone's behind you, better a small package than a big one!  ;D

was first in with no in line at 10:30.
recieved paper work, filled it out (minutes) and when I turned around, the line was out the door !
probably had something to do with the guy arguing the legality of 30 rnd mags for his AR at the window.

very cool, calm and collected cop behind the glass.

I was laughing so hard, I  screwed up and missed my zip code on the paperwork  .

The guy should have just left the mag at home.  Would save him some grief.  If you register the long gun the same day as you buy it because it's easier for you, remember to take the 30 round mag out of the box while you're still at theLGS and leave it in your car when you register.

So he handed the gun over with a mag inserted?!?!

I'm confused though, is HPD saying 30 round magazines are illegal?

This might be how HPD officers obtain mags for their duty rifles!
