I've heard rumors that some fire departments have refused to enter a home where there's a good amount of ammo stored unless it's in metal containers.

i've also seen videos where people have done extensive tests to see if ammo will actually ignite and do any damage under firey conditions.  Without the compression of a round inside a chamber and barrel, if the ammo even does fire, it has no velocity compared to being fired from a gun.  Out of hundreds of rounds in this one test, they managed to get one round to fire, and it didn't penetrate the drywall it hit right next to it.

Something else to research when deciding on what storage ontainers to use.

I think I posted a thread on this some years ago and you are correct. Some rounds barely got stuck in drywall. So I'll bet they won't even penetrate a fire jacket.  HFD SOP if they hear rounds popping off is to stay out. IDK about if they find ammo/ammo cans during a search.  I mean it would be the same as finding a propane tank while searching.  I think it would depend on how close the fire is to said things that can go boom with heat.  Or would they take the time to take the items and toss them out the window to avoid them going boom if the fire isn't able to be isolated.

With that being said, storing ammo in a plastic or even metal ammo can won't help much from a direct fire.  Even fire rated safes in a direct fire, I've seen them opened and the plastic parts on the AR's inside were all melted, even some gas tubes were melted. . Although the safe itself is "flame" resistant, the stuff inside will heat up and direct fire can cause damage. But would someone be willing to spend thousands of $ on a fire rated safe just to store ammo?  I know a few who do, but I would say your average gun owner won't.

In the end, things to protect against fire buys you and the fire department time from the rounds cooking off.

Re. Ammo in a fire...

I was at the range when hpd guys had to get rid of turned-in ammo. They set a 55gal drum on the combat range and lit a fire in it, then threw the ammo in. It sounded like popcorn.
This was circa 40 years ago.

For some reason, I can imagine them doing this.

How much ammo do you REALLY need? Not much. I would say 100 rounds per defensive firearm is plenty.  Think about it. If your situation is not resolved by the time you fired 100 rounds, you needed more help than your firearm could provide. The way I look at it is by the time I could fire 100 rounds, either the perp(s) or myself would be dead. There is a big difference between really need, feel comfortable with, and want to have.

Took my friend to DCT to buy his first batch of ammo. He's had a handgun for 6 months and no ammo.  He bought a case of 9mm FMJ and 300rds HP.

Yeah, I agree more thought and emphasis should be on acquiring good deals on range and practice ammunition.  If you shoot a lot then you should always be looking out ahead for good deals, and not be too concerned if you are stockpiling billions and billions of rounds. ;)

Defensive ammo, not so much.  I mean, how much HP rounds do you need before the zombie hordes come to eat your boto? :D

Seriously though, defensive ammo just a couple of boxes and rotate out every year or so.

Isn't that like buying a car with no gas?

I need to take baby steps with him.  Even though he's from Chiraq and understands the importance of being armed and not relying on others to respond, he is still scared of guns.  Due to more events unfolding here and across the world, he is taking 1 more step.

He also asked me if he should buy lots of ammo and sell later at  a higher price.  I explained my philosophy when it comes to the 2a and how I wouldn't use capitalism against fellow 2a people.  He is financially stable.

A separate issue with him is would he shoot if needed or would he allow a bad guy to take the gun from him.  Something he has to come to terms with before an incident.

But yea, I wouldn't purposefully buy ammo to resell it.  Though if I stocked up when it's plentiful and there is an extreme shortage later, I may sell it if the price was right.

If your friend is a newbie, he should get out to the range and practice. I can coach if needed. No charge but I don't mind a few bucks for gas. It's a 60 mile round trip to the range.

interesting how this conversation turned out after the gun show because there were market forces on full display - no inhibitions! People were buying from each other and reselling  ;D

For now, I recommend not buying more than what you need now.  Price will come back down in a few months as demand comes down and manufacturers ramp up.

There's probably enough ammo being made now to supply everyone.  It's the panic buyers hoarding ammo and resellers that's the problem

I think biden is the reason for panic buying.

And his foreign policy.  If he even has one.

Oh and liberals and their kumbaya philosophy on burglars, rapists, and criminals in general.

3 different things that when come together equals:

SHTF or

TEOTWAWKI

edited to add:  Also some people plan to barter with ammo since money will be worthless, maybe good for wipe da ass.

there is no problem. There are market forces at work. Buying and selling is not a crime if it was our real estate market is in trouble. We are at freedom to buy and sell when we want. No one is forcing anyone to buy or sell.
Another issue with your problem definition is "enough ammo being made now to supply everyone"
How do you determine a person's supply? You give them a ration?

What is up with this post?  I didn't mention anything about forcing and nationally, I believe there's sufficient ammo made to supply everyone.  Recommending people not to hoard or resell at this time allows demand and supply to balance and stabilize so other people can get the ammo they need right now.  It's not radical ideology.

Note:  post wasn't directed to you if that's the misunderstanding.  Just people in general.

you identified 'hoarders and resellers" as the problem  They are not. Resellers are retailers who buy from distributors or direct from manufacturers. So if I have a case of ammo to your box, am I a hoarder?

For me personally I plan to buy range (practice) ammo when I feel the price is what I'm comfortable shelling out.

Right now KHSC is limited as far as range days and time slots but who knows, if or when things get better at least I have the practice ammo to go whenever I want to, instead of letting the ammo stash dictate if I go or not.

I like to go to Vegas.  I like to gamble.  I have a bankroll fund that is used only for that.  Nothing else.  I apply the same thinking to my ammo budget.

Place ur entire ammo bankroll on black for roulette and double up. Then parlay. No need worry about ammo prices.
