I am fortunate to live near a school so it was a 2 minute walk to the cafeteria/polling place.

My employer allotted me a few hours to go vote.
Isn't that some kind of law?

2018 Hawaii Revised Statutes
TITLE 2. ELECTIONS
11. Elections, Generally
11-95 Employees entitled to leave on election day for voting.

Two consecutive hours max of paid time off during polling hours.  You can use that time in conjunction with normal lunch or break times if you think you need more than 2 hours.

Our employer required us to show our voting receipt.

Some do, some don't.  Mine never did, but nobody saw a need to lie.  Most of us would take off the last 2 hours of the workday -- 3 if we took a late lunch.  it was a short workday regardless of how long voting actually took.  Any time off not spent voting was normally spent in rush hour traffic, so trying to return to work that late in the day made no sense.
