If you hear select or "full auto" fire on public shooting days coming from the silhouette range, it is NOT the HPD and guaranteed NOT the SSD.  Again wrong agency / agencies.

I am not saying that you will not potentially hear select fire from HPD on a public shooting day

Puff puff give
Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Not sure the confusion here?  I think I was clear on what I mentioned.  Read what you quoted closely.

- The SSD does not train on the Silhouette range.  It is controlled by the State and is co-used by various State and Federal agencies.
- The SSD does not train as a unit on a public shooting day.  They have a designated day at stick to it.
- This does not mean that you will not hear select auto fire from the HPD on public days from the lower bays.
- This also does not mean that you may not have SSD instructors providing specialized training on public shooting days to other HPD officers, SSD officers or other agencies.  This does not conflict with any statements about the SSD training as a "unit" on a public day.

I hear guys going crazy on the silhouette range every wednesday too. If its not HPD, then who is it? I really didn't care to walk up and see what agency was on their shirts/jackets, but I assumed it was HPD.
Q, I have already answered these questions.  It is various State and Federal agencies.

I've been at the rifle range early when the SSD snipers were training. It was quite entertaining watching them. Most of them had cans, so when I got there I didn't have ear pro on when they were shooting. I guess the guys without cans were in a later drill and those were super loud!

They did a competition where the instructor tied ballons on the plate rack at about 240 yards and each team had to shoot a specific colored balloon. The balloons were moving all around in the wind and made it really tough. One sniper hit a plate and the spall popped his and another team's balloon. The other team noticed it and went on. Hey, his threat was down. Haha. Good thing the instructor wasn't there.

When they did the hostage taker shot drill, I was on my spotting scope to see their shots. None of them hit the hostage!  Good that these guys are training! I want them to be the best!!!

Yes, the counter snipers will be present more often and will at times shoot prior to the public arrival.  There are also other agency counter snipers that utilize the rifle side on public days in the am, but primarily the HPD.  There are also certain times of the year when the SSD will utilize the rifle range prior to public arrival throughout an entire week.  A bit of an inconvenience perhaps to those who show up at 8-9 am and want to set up and place targets out on the range, but necessary training.  Most of the bolt rifles have cans but there are a few that are not.  It is also a common practice to track your groups with and without the can as impacts shift a few MOA.

Nah. I didn't mind them being there at all and neither did any of the guys that were there when I got to the range.  One of the guys scored a bunch of their .308 FGMM brass, so that might have helped. Haha. I'd actually like to be there more often to see how they train. I was actually surprised that the instructor was ok with us being on the benches behind the firing line while they occupied the range. They were set up in the part of the range that would be closed during weekdays anyways.

It's just too bad Hawaii doesn't have more range facilities to go around. I've been to some amazing ranges on the mainland. Where it's not uncommon for members to have an entire bay to themselves to train.

That is the standard area to set up and shoot from.  Those benches are out of the way and it lines up nicely with the walkway opening in the berm and you can more easily see a target set up at 200 yards from those positions.  It is not a big deal having the public around and the shooting usually ceases around 1100 or so anyway.  Several good conversations have come from the public interaction, but there are definitely some who may not have a good opinion of LE in general, but most of the time it is positive.  Now when the SSD utilizes the rifle range on public days for those specific week long events, the set up is the half of the range on the pistol side.  Signs are posted and areas taped off to keep people away from the benches for safety and there is a lot of gear around.  Some people ignore it anyway and want a closer look.  It is just asked that they stay out of this area from Mikes office down to the pistol side.  They can set up on the other side or watch from there.  One older fella walked right past the signs and tape and started collecting brass.  He was nicely asked to stay behind the taped off areas.

I very much agree that I wish that Hawaii had more facilities / venues to better accommodate LE and public shooters.  I would also love to see a facility that was run along the lines of the Clark County public range in Vegas.  More options for civilians in shooting courses and the ability to shoot and train.  There are definitely those who appreciate the brass.   :)
