Title: Koko Head Range is so sad...
Post by: garfy2008 on February 05, 2017, 08:59:22 PM
I guess it's true that "Maui No Ka Oi" (Maui is the best).  Unlike KHSC here that restricts you to 5 rounds in a magazine and you can't fire rapidly really shows how backwards Oahu is compared to Maui.  Yes, not only does Maui have an NHRA drag strip (which we no longer have despite having almost 10 times the population of Maui) and Krispy Kreme, but they also have a COUNTY shooting range that apparently has NO limit on how many rounds you can have in your magazine AND you can shoot as rapidly as you want (obviously you must be "in control" or the RSO will get on your back).  I thought the Ukumehame range was a "gun club" range when I saw the video of them shooting 50 cal rifles and shooting an AR-15 with a slide stock, but I was wrong.  The Ukumehame shooting range IS a Maui County range under the Parks and Recreation department.  We need to urge our City Council to change the rules at KHSC so we can actually practice home defense tactics using our pistols or rifles.  Reality is that you won't shoot a threatening criminal once and count 1-2-3 before shooting again.  You'll be dead if you had to wait.  We need to be able to train at our public range as well as having target positions at perhaps 10-15 yards, not only 25 yards for the handgun range (how many of you have a home that has a 25 yard distance from one end of the hallway or stairway to the other?)  Anyway, it'd be a shame to have to fly to Maui just to practice using my AR or handgun with self-defense tactics.  Check out the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EstfM8Z9v5E

Dont think it was due to a fire. It was because HFD needed to clear the area for "training"?!?! That's what I overhead before I was told to leave at 12:40, Lame.

There are differences between the ranges. There are residential areas within range of KHSC.  Slidefire stocks and rapid fire by inexperienced shooters increases the likelihood of a round being shot into the air into those areas.  If I was an RSO, I'd have a hard time watching 60 shooters for safety during rapidfire.  Also the bullseye pistol shooters don't want to give up their range setup either.  Other ranges, such as Ukumehame, Schofield, Kaneohe, and Puuloa have clear downrange areas that meet their caliber restrictions.  Ranges are designed to have a clear downrange area of a couple miles or more depending on the calibers shot there.

KHSC could be improved better by flattening the shooting positions, installing overhead baffles, doubling or tripling the height of the backstops, and having more RSO's or volunteers to watch the firing line.

This is why there is the Koko Head Improvement Petition.  https://www.change.org/p/kirk-caldwell-improve-the-kokohead-shooting-complex

Yes we need a track too
We either need a millionaire who loves racing to donate a track or get rid of all the pussy legislators
Either way I don't see it happening anytime soon
No movement in the past 11 years on building a track here
I've seen many performance shops lose a lot of business and money because of no track
Sucks to have a fast car and nowhere to enjoy it
Sucks to have a defense gun and nowhere to shoot it

Actually we can practice defensive shooting here.
There are indoors, action bays, shooting clubs, miltary ranges, etc

Thats why i practice defense shooting at indoor ranges. No choice and it cost way more.

So KHSC would look down upon the Binary trigger and doing a Magpul 60 round magazine dump?  Lol

The reason I heard for the magazine limit is if the firearm breaks and goes full auto then it'll run out of ammo by the time the muzzle rises too much.

How many times has that happened?  Isn't it more likely the operator will release the trigger right away when that happens?  Seems like a very uncommon problem.

The only thing the 5 round limit is good for is reducing the time for everyone to complete their shooting when the twenty-minute cease fire is called.  1-5 rounds doesn't keep everyone waiting to go down range.

zippz, while I appreciate your efforts to change the situation at the range, the ultimate logical conclusion to the "problems" you list is to close the range. If it's "dangerous", it's "dangerous", and incrementally lowering various thresholds of "acceptable activity" only postpones the inevitable "commonsense gun safety" solution: closure. And, I have to admit, if there were no range, there would be no possibility of any "accidents". Just like if there were no guns, there would be no "gun violence". It makes perfect sense, if you're (not you zippz) a hypocritical idiot.

I had no idea there were such restrictions there as a 5 round mag limit and slow-timed firing. Never heard of such a thing before. We don't have the problems here on the Big Island. Because we don't have a public range.

Maybe the answer for Oahu is to relocate the range to a less populated area, but that would mean West side or Kahaluu to North Shore.

Of course a more rural setting allows greater freedoms.
But then again, what if you want to practice careful bullseye marksmanship at Ukumehame and you are have a guy shooting a 50 cal on one side and a bump fire on the other side?
KHSC is a very large operation compared to Ukumehame servicing a much, much larger population.
It's apples and oranges.

As far as close range tactical style shooting at KHSC, there are combat-style matches every weekend with a number of clubs.
There is also HDF and the HRA fun shoots.

That would be the most optimal.  All of the range designers and manager's I've spoken to here and on the mainland suggested shutting KHSC down and moving it somewhere else, but they know it won't happen in reality.  Would be good if we could get a large piece of land or valley alongside the Waianae mountain so you have a good backstop and no neighbors complaining.  If Schofield was downsized the city could take take over part of their range.  I don't see a commercial business being able to do it on a large scale since it costs a lot of money with high liability, and low return on investment.

JMHO

Range restrictions at KHSC are more about what neighbors don't want or are afraid of as opposed to what the users want.  Yes, the range SOP states specific range operations, but much of the reality has changed over the years due to complaints or concerns of those who live in the area.  Most of those concerns range from unfounded fear to downright false "observations".  Like suspecting a round from a ricochet from steel that lands on a house 2 miles away and the projectile didn't have any signs of deformation.

On the other hand, as an RSO, I see many ranges that allow more "freedoms" as also dangerous.  On the mainland, there are public ranges that don't have any RSOs on the firing line.  On ranges that I've shot, many times target changes are left up to the group on that particular range.  Not a big deal with there aren't that many people or the people on the range are safe, but there area always the bad apples.  In that case, the bad apples actions range from loading guns while you're down range to going back to shooting while you're down range.  While I wasn't down range when that happened, I've seen it happen.  So sometimes rules aren't a bad thing and are often a function of the people who use the range.  I'm all about more "freedom" to do what one wants, but like anything in life, that needs to be tempered with reality.  That there will always be goobers and idiots that ruin things for everyone else.

I also have friends that find places in the boonies and shoot.  One in WA has a sweet area where you can set up on one ridge and shoot across a valley to targets on the other side.  Anywhere from 400-800+ yards.  Really fun.  Good vantage point and you can see people coming from far away, so no real danger.  Then, you'll get clueless people who show up at the same "range" and are loading up their handguns and pointing the guns all over.  Last thing you want to do is to get into a heated discussion in that kind of situation.

Is Koko Head sad? Yes it is now. I preferred it when we had steel out to 440 yards. I still get enjoyment out of shooting there, tho. Mostly because I have changed the way I shoot/practice and I have purchased firearms more adapted to the way I now shoot. I am still trying to figure out what to do with the firearms I own that were purchased when we had 440 yard steel. Silhouette is still fun and pistol side is good fun as well. Action bay shoots are still a good distraction. So it is still okay for me but I hate having to adapt to the way the range has changed over the years.  :'( :'( :'(

I think the best thing for Big Island folks is to get the old national guard rifle and pistol range in Hilo improved.  It was closed down due to encroachment.  Rennovate it and add overhead baffles and it could be reopened.  I think the rifle range went out to 500 or 600 yards and there were a couple pistol ranges.

Shooting the steel was my favorite thing to do at the rifle range.  Shoot some paper to zero or confirm and then steel.  Hated when they took that stuff down, which I heard was due to complaints about ricochet and reverting back to standard range SOP.  After that, I didn't go nearly as often.  I also stopped shooting my 700 much after that as well, but more due to changing interest than change in the range.  But maybe my overall desire to go went way down after the steel was taken down.

I will shoot in the action bays as much as I can for competition or LIFE/HRA/HDF, but different experiences.  Silhouette is always fun as well too.  I just love shooting steel.

I hear ya about shooting steel. Getting that ring or knocking something over is the best. I like shooting at paper to, but reactive targets are the most fun IMHO.

Each range has their own nuances. The Clark County Shooting Complex has their own target frames and they provide the cardboard but it costs $7 per person. Sometimes it's hard to staple the targets to the hole ridden backdrop. I've been there when someone went full auto. I asked the RSO if that's okay and he said it's not up to them to enforce the firearm regulations. The big bummer is that they don't allow metal targets. They have a 200 yard lanes but they have golf carts to take the shooters to the targets. Otherwise, it would take too long for them to go out and back. The 100 yard range is broken up into 25, 50, 75, and 100 lengths.

You can shoot rapid fire, load more than 5 in a mag, draw and shoot closer than 25 yards.
HDF and other clubs do it all the time in the bays.

I think the distance we have is reasonable given the average shooter there. I can see why there are certain rules. There is not ONE day that goes by without the ROs scolding people for stepping over the yellow line during a cease fire. I hear them repeat the same directions every time before a cease fire. People just don't listen.

Some rules are there because an accident happened or because of some external influence such as this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PNHKMSwqXE

He's the reason why the steel targets are no more and we have the weird eyebrows. He was there stalking people and capturing people "aiming at the sky".
Besides its a lot of work to set up long range targets both steel and paper.

When I was growing up on  Molokai, we would shoot at an abandoned dump.  We would shoot old cars, washing machines, TVs, bottles etc.  That's when I found out a 30-06 150 gr soft point was capable of going through the trunk lid, back seat, front seat, and dash board of a 1953 Chevy.

At my home range I like to shoot those targets that spin around when you hit them.

When I spoke with County Prosecutor Mitch Roth last week about the laws concerning the legality of shooting on my ag-zoned property he mentioned something about the North Kona range and I said that I had talked to Game Management Commission chairman Tom Lodge prior to the meeting discussing the possibility of a Hilo area range and Lodge gave me the impression that the Kona range was a near impossibility. Roth said he "was working on something" that might make the Kona range a reality after all. Sounded as if he couldn't be specific because it was some kind of "unofficial" process. We'll see. Maybe.

That's not that common.

Second hand info here, so apologize in advance if I get the details off or if someone here was affected by this situation.  Anyways, Iolani school has been at their current location for decades, even when this situation occurred.  They built apartments and I believe renovated some that were located around Iolani's stadium.  Well, during football season, that included football games at night and everything that comes with football games.  Cheering, band playing, etc.  Residents of the apartments in the area, that came AFTER Iolani's stadium was already there for many years, started complaining about the noise!  I don't recall the details, but I believe they submitted formal complaints to the school, city, neighborhood board, and others.  I believe some even started legal action.  I want to say that this was in the early 90s.

It does happen and it happened to me. The 1911s go full auto when the sear gets to worn.

1st round hit the target the next 3 went over the berm at Puuloa.

Check out the wood above points 1-10 at Koko Head pistol side. There are a lot of .45 sized holes.

Semi auto rifles with floating fining pins also can have slam fires. I experienced that also.

Shit does happen.

My AR went full auto on me at the range. TWICE on 2 different occasions. I had a fully adjustable trigger on it and adjusted it a little too tight. And when it got a small amount of crud in it, it would go full auto. It was fully controllable, BTW.

Aren't we all here for the same thing?  Since when was there a rivalry about who has the best range?  We do have clubs here that practice self-defense types of drills in the actions every weekend and they are open to the public.  So before you poo-poo something realize we're all in the same boat  :shaka:

I feel it's good to have a discussion and get different points of view.  Living on an island, a lot of people don't get to experience something different or know what is possible.  People that only shoot at Koko Head never get to experience what a modern professionally designed range is like.  Same for Maui and Big Island.  I think everyone learned a little something here.

For me, I'm interested in range design.  I've never been to the Maui range so I looked up the videos, pics, and google maps to find it's up against a huge mountain, lots of people use it, and there's less rules there.   I'll have to visit it one day....preferably when the nene geese aren't nesting.

we should try to push to get the steel back at kokohead at a longer distance.
seems like it would be harder for a ricochet to travel over the mountain when it is at a longer distance and closer to the mountain than it would be at a closer distance.  although both distances I doubt it would travel over the mountain.
when the target is closer to the mountain, it would have to ricochet at a more vertical angle to even make it over, and then even if it would go over, it wont go far bc its going more vertically.
when the target is closer it could ricochet at a less vertical angle and have more of a chance of going further if it would go over the mountain, which I doubt it would.
in all the years that the longer distance target was out there, were there any complaints of stray bullets?  or was it only recently when a certain "person" had his "pussy" objections, was there complaints of stray bullets.  coincidence?  I think not.
or what if there were to be a design around a steel target at a longer distance that would 100% contain any ricochet bullets.  that could satisfy any concerns of stray bullets.
I would love to get a longer distance at kokohead.
even if we were to do a 200 yard trial for say a year, and if no problems, place another target out to 300 or more.

in all the years that the longer distance target was out there, were there any complaints of stray bullets?  or was it only recently when a certain "person" had his "pussy" objections, was there complaints of stray bullets.  coincidence?  I think not.
or what if there were to be a design around a steel target at a longer distance that would 100% contain any ricochet bullets.  that could satisfy any concerns of stray bullets.
I would love to get a longer distance at kokohead.
even if we were to do a 200 yard trial for say a year, and if no problems, place another target out to 300 or more.
Would require change to the written range SOP.  I have the original SOP somewhere and it's pretty old.

I would have to take a look at the physics of it again, but I recall someone looking at the possible trajectory and muzzle velocity needed to launch rifle rounds into the neighboring valley.  One path that was looked at was the path going almost directly over Koko Head and into the area beyond.  I'd have to dig that up, but I thought it wasn't possible, or plausible.  Basically, the "person" was BS.  If a direct shot wasn't able to reach that far, I would think a ricochet would only go a fraction of that distance.  That said, I also recall that the reports of bullets that were found and suspected ricochet weren't even deformed.

Time to refresh on physics.

it's not only the SOP
the range was designed for the 100 yard targets ONLY
even the 50 yard targets are outside the design parameters
any targets outside the design parameters are a liability risk
and the city hates risk
i am sure many in the city would rather the range be closed to reduce risk

what if we had something like this, only bigger.

but I see what you guys are saying.  that's what the design of the range is - 100 yards.  dam!  >:(

Some rules are there because an accident happened or because of some external influence such as this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PNHKMSwqXE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PNHKMSwqXE)

He's the reason why the steel targets are no more and we have the weird eyebrows. He was there stalking people and capturing people "aiming at the sky".

I Love that Video Ren!
I wish it was longer than 2:35.

I don't wish it was longer.
Notice that the video only shows his upper half of his body...I don't want to know what is going on further south....he is so fappy with that cat....

I think it's a matter of the RSO responsibility to make sure we're not shooting over the mountain and it's difficult when people are shooting up at the metal target. I had one request that I not raise the barrel while I close the bolt so if it were to go off, it would go into the ground instead. Makes sense to me. Apparently, the Kokohead stairs hikers don't like ricochets flying over their heads. Still something like the trailer above could be placed out 200 yards or something. I wonder how long it would last with the bullet holes and salty air?

Why not just shoot .22lr at 50yards at kokohead?  That way it reduces the risk to all around and reduces the chance of ricochets going over the mountain.  we could just get rid of all our centerfire rifles all together and just have .22s.

i been to ukumehame once and saw that same dude with the 50 cal and was wearing the same white painter's uniform.  lol   They were rapid firing the barrett 50 cal.  We had the pleasure of shooting .30-06 out of uncle's garand, and the thump from the .30-06 was less than the thump from a 50 cal 8 stalls away, and they were rapid firing!  Also had a dude with a rapid fire stock on an AK, i thought it was automatic at first.  Great fun over there.

we should try to push to get the steel back at kokohead at a longer distance.
seems like it would be harder for a ricochet to travel over the mountain when it is at a longer distance and closer to the mountain than it would be at a closer distance.  although both distances I doubt it would travel over the mountain.
when the target is closer to the mountain, it would have to ricochet at a more vertical angle to even make it over, and then even if it would go over, it wont go far bc its going more vertically.

I'm with ya. I see no reason why something could not be enginered to totally prevent ricochets from occurring. Maybe a steel enclosure, anchors in concrete with three or four steel targets surrounded by armor plate at the sides, top, bottom and rear welded at various angles that would direct bullets down and rearward towards the dirt. Sure rust would be a problem but with some form of volunteer maintenance, it could last a real long time. Oh yea, place this enclosure rite up against the mountain or inside of it! Just a suggestion...

I don't think ricochet is a problem if the bullets hit the steel.
The problem is when the bullets don't hit the steel target or the steel enclosure.

maybe build a bigger berm behind the 100 yd line, or plant a bunch of trees behind the 100yd line on top the berm, inner green thumb  ;D

Some stuff your correct on others you arent. It is a Maui County Range but its run by a non profit group called Valley isle shooters. Which is only open to the public 3 TIMES A MONTH. First sunday second saturday and third thursday. If its raining or to wind for a blowout (target stands dont stand up) then they close and we do not get an addition day to make up for it. Atleast in oahu koko head is open way more often then here. You have indoor ranges which we dont. Basically besides those three days only other options to shoot is ipsc, cowboy action, and trap but im not sure on the days that the trap section is open. Ill post up a schedule so u can see what we have to work with. U might not be able to have as much fun shoot there as u can here but you can shoot way more often

What? No .22? What is wrong with you? J/K

Nothing is more fun (and cheap) to shoot than a .22. IMHO But variety is the spice of life so one must own numerous .22's.  :shaka: :shaka: :shaka:

Last month, I witnessed someone at KSC running out to place his target while the range was not. I suggested to the RO that they have a red flag on a rope during the cease fire so everyone has a visual clue when it's okay to approach the bench.

Some people can afford such luxuries as live target holders. No need spotting scope.

Heard some guy complained to the ROs about the 5 rnd mag limit rules and the lack of anything beyond 100 yards. He also complained said that they should open up the military ranges. OK. I told him that they are open and pointed them to our website. I also told him there's no shade and since we shoot at distance we take turns pulling targets for each other and setting up the targets.

Considering what is behind the target the guy on the stool is holding, I doubt any shooting takes place there.

And on the BI we suck wind, nothing but some scrub at Manuka with no target holders or any damn thing.  That, and theoretically, the DLNR could raid it for hunting licenses at any time.

All on an island with more square miles than Connecticut with about the same population as Oceanside.
