we should try to push to get the steel back at kokohead at a longer distance.
seems like it would be harder for a ricochet to travel over the mountain when it is at a longer distance and closer to the mountain than it would be at a closer distance.  although both distances I doubt it would travel over the mountain.
when the target is closer to the mountain, it would have to ricochet at a more vertical angle to even make it over, and then even if it would go over, it wont go far bc its going more vertically.
when the target is closer it could ricochet at a less vertical angle and have more of a chance of going further if it would go over the mountain, which I doubt it would.
in all the years that the longer distance target was out there, were there any complaints of stray bullets?  or was it only recently when a certain "person" had his "pussy" objections, was there complaints of stray bullets.  coincidence?  I think not.
or what if there were to be a design around a steel target at a longer distance that would 100% contain any ricochet bullets.  that could satisfy any concerns of stray bullets.
I would love to get a longer distance at kokohead.
even if we were to do a 200 yard trial for say a year, and if no problems, place another target out to 300 or more.
Would require change to the written range SOP.  I have the original SOP somewhere and it's pretty old.

I would have to take a look at the physics of it again, but I recall someone looking at the possible trajectory and muzzle velocity needed to launch rifle rounds into the neighboring valley.  One path that was looked at was the path going almost directly over Koko Head and into the area beyond.  I'd have to dig that up, but I thought it wasn't possible, or plausible.  Basically, the "person" was BS.  If a direct shot wasn't able to reach that far, I would think a ricochet would only go a fraction of that distance.  That said, I also recall that the reports of bullets that were found and suspected ricochet weren't even deformed.

Time to refresh on physics.

it's not only the SOP
the range was designed for the 100 yard targets ONLY
even the 50 yard targets are outside the design parameters
any targets outside the design parameters are a liability risk
and the city hates risk
i am sure many in the city would rather the range be closed to reduce risk

what if we had something like this, only bigger.

but I see what you guys are saying.  that's what the design of the range is - 100 yards.  dam!  >:(

Some rules are there because an accident happened or because of some external influence such as this guy:

He's the reason why the steel targets are no more and we have the weird eyebrows. He was there stalking people and capturing people "aiming at the sky".

I Love that Video Ren!
I wish it was longer than 2:35.

Notice that the video only shows his upper half of his body...I don't want to know what is going on further south....he is so fappy with that cat....

I think it's a matter of the RSO responsibility to make sure we're not shooting over the mountain and it's difficult when people are shooting up at the metal target. I had one request that I not raise the barrel while I close the bolt so if it were to go off, it would go into the ground instead. Makes sense to me. Apparently, the Kokohead stairs hikers don't like ricochets flying over their heads. Still something like the trailer above could be placed out 200 yards or something. I wonder how long it would last with the bullet holes and salty air?

Why not just shoot .22lr at 50yards at kokohead?  That way it reduces the risk to all around and reduces the chance of ricochets going over the mountain.  we could just get rid of all our centerfire rifles all together and just have .22s.

i been to ukumehame once and saw that same dude with the 50 cal and was wearing the same white painter's uniform.  lol   They were rapid firing the barrett 50 cal.  We had the pleasure of shooting .30-06 out of uncle's garand, and the thump from the .30-06 was less than the thump from a 50 cal 8 stalls away, and they were rapid firing!  Also had a dude with a rapid fire stock on an AK, i thought it was automatic at first.  Great fun over there.

I'm with ya. I see no reason why something could not be enginered to totally prevent ricochets from occurring. Maybe a steel enclosure, anchors in concrete with three or four steel targets surrounded by armor plate at the sides, top, bottom and rear welded at various angles that would direct bullets down and rearward towards the dirt. Sure rust would be a problem but with some form of volunteer maintenance, it could last a real long time. Oh yea, place this enclosure rite up against the mountain or inside of it! Just a suggestion...

I don't think ricochet is a problem if the bullets hit the steel.
The problem is when the bullets don't hit the steel target or the steel enclosure.

maybe build a bigger berm behind the 100 yd line, or plant a bunch of trees behind the 100yd line on top the berm, inner green thumb  ;D

I guess it's true that "Maui No Ka Oi" (Maui is the best).  Unlike KHSC here that restricts you to 5 rounds in a magazine and you can't fire rapidly really shows how backwards Oahu is compared to Maui.  Yes, not only does Maui have an NHRA drag strip (which we no longer have despite having almost 10 times the population of Maui) and Krispy Kreme, but they also have a COUNTY shooting range that apparently has NO limit on how many rounds you can have in your magazine AND you can shoot as rapidly as you want (obviously you must be "in control" or the RSO will get on your back).  I thought the Ukumehame range was a "gun club" range when I saw the video of them shooting 50 cal rifles and shooting an AR-15 with a slide stock, but I was wrong.  The Ukumehame shooting range IS a Maui County range under the Parks and Recreation department.  We need to urge our City Council to change the rules at KHSC so we can actually practice home defense tactics using our pistols or rifles.  Reality is that you won't shoot a threatening criminal once and count 1-2-3 before shooting again.  You'll be dead if you had to wait.  We need to be able to train at our public range as well as having target positions at perhaps 10-15 yards, not only 25 yards for the handgun range (how many of you have a home that has a 25 yard distance from one end of the hallway or stairway to the other?)  Anyway, it'd be a shame to have to fly to Maui just to practice using my AR or handgun with self-defense tactics.  Check out the video at

Some stuff your correct on others you arent. It is a Maui County Range but its run by a non profit group called Valley isle shooters. Which is only open to the public 3 TIMES A MONTH. First sunday second saturday and third thursday. If its raining or to wind for a blowout (target stands dont stand up) then they close and we do not get an addition day to make up for it. Atleast in oahu koko head is open way more often then here. You have indoor ranges which we dont. Basically besides those three days only other options to shoot is ipsc, cowboy action, and trap but im not sure on the days that the trap section is open. Ill post up a schedule so u can see what we have to work with. U might not be able to have as much fun shoot there as u can here but you can shoot way more often

What? No .22? What is wrong with you? J/K

Nothing is more fun (and cheap) to shoot than a .22. IMHO But variety is the spice of life so one must own numerous .22's.  :shaka: :shaka: :shaka:

Last month, I witnessed someone at KSC running out to place his target while the range was not. I suggested to the RO that they have a red flag on a rope during the cease fire so everyone has a visual clue when it's okay to approach the bench.

Heard some guy complained to the ROs about the 5 rnd mag limit rules and the lack of anything beyond 100 yards. He also complained said that they should open up the military ranges. OK. I told him that they are open and pointed them to our website. I also told him there's no shade and since we shoot at distance we take turns pulling targets for each other and setting up the targets.
