They're all basically the same.
I know, I know, there's the purists and fanboys out there that will swear brand X is better than brand Y but in my experience, the big manufacturers all make quality guns.
I have a Springfield I really like and a Kimber as well. I almost bought a used Ruger 1911 from a guy but got beat to the punch.
Go out and shoot some and see which one you like best in terms of looks and goodies on it.
Hey maybe we can have a 2aHawaii 1911 day at the range.
-
I would look for a 1911 made from forged chrome-moly steel... Frame AND slide.
Most of the better makers have forged frames and slides.
But there are so many 1911 makers nowdays, I've lost track of what is what.
In the past, we stayed away from stainless steel.

thanks guys, yeah i was looking into the Sig Sauer 1911 but heard alot of gripe about the external extractors, so im leaning more towards kimber, or springfield

What are you planning to do with it?
Are you looking for a competition or defensive gun?
If competition, IPSC, IDPA, Bullseye, or other specialty?
If defensive, Hi-cap, compact, alloy frame, longslide?
I've seen noobs buy guns because of coolness factor, but couldn't use them because they were not compatible for the purpose they were bought for.

I would probably be considered a "fanboy" of the Kimber...but that is just me.
I shot a Girsan MC1911-G2 and for a "cheap" 1911 and it shoots pretty damn good!

Want to try this, going to range tomorrow :shaka:

i was aiming towards a kimber however i was reading that alot of kimbers come out of the box with problems and issues, but that could be the same with any manufacturer......

FYI, OGC has a pretty good selection of 1911s in stock. I got a TRP after looking at several different brands/models.

I have a S&W Pro Series 1911 in .45 ACP that has been very reliable through many thousands of rounds, external extractor and all. The only gripe I have with it is that the grips that came with gun are a little thicker than I would like. The grips would be simple to change, I really like the VZs , but I'm just too lazy to order them. On a side note, SEC used to have it in stock, and they may qualify for the LEO/1st Responder pricing. I have seen the 9mm version have some feed issues though. Not sure if the .45 would fit your Bullseye requirements, but it definitely works for USPSA Single Stack division and even Limited or L10 if you don't mind picking up 10 round mags and the added cost of shooting .45 instead of .40.

Bullseye 1911s are rarely off the rack guns. Most are custom jobs. 3inch groups at 50 yards are the standard.
NRA matches allow optics. CMP and Military matches are iron sights only.
Choose wisely.

Not to hijack but I'm wondering the same thing. Only have experience with a trp and I loved it, for the money I hear its great.
Side note, are MIM parts even an issue?
-
Almost forgot...Les Baer makes a DAMN FINE 1911 as well.

I got to shoot my stepdads new sig scorpion, loved it and now want one. Although it is the only 1911 I have ever shot, so I can't really give a good recommendation..

I have several 1911s - Norinco, Colt, and Springfield Armory.
Also had a Kimber.
My Norc was my first 1911, I sold my Kimber...

So what's the verdict?
(Seems like we are all waiting on verdicts these days! :-D
I too am considering a 1911.
Primarily I am equipped for 9mm (ammo + handguns). But I would like a .45 ACP "option" and heck, I had fun shooting a 1911 before, and it was surprisingly easy to shoot (I was pleasantly surprised).
Having said all this, I have gotten quite a lot of feedback from people over the years that the gun that jams the most is the 1911. And whenever people say that, there will be tons of feedback saying otherwise, and usually saying it is because people screwed around trying to fine tune their 1911s too much, etc.
So, bottom line, I want a 1911 for the "coolness" factor*. Yes I admit it, mainly because I already stated I am tooled for 9mm mostly and indeed I am a "Glock person". So I actually want to consider the 1911 instead of a Glock 21 (.45ACP).
* Not really "coolness" but a 1911 that is good to look at and resembles the legendary .45ACP American icon that it is. And doesn't jam! :-D
-
We have two Springfield 1911s. One in 9 mil and other in 45 acp. We never had any jams so far.

Passivek - what budget are you looking at for your 1911?

For me, my budget would be under $1000 I reckon.
Ideally not a whole lot more than the Glock 21.
-
little bit over your budget, but i looked at the springer MC operator at OGC this thursday and it was sweet

My wife and I own a Sig Scorpion and Sig Extreme (same gun with different color schemes) and they are great and got them at a great price from OGC. My next 1911 will be a Les Baer Hemi 572 . . . SWEET looking gun!

I just picked up a Ruger SR1911 as a decent entry level 1911. You may wish to consider getting an entry level 1911 or something just North of that for starters instead of a more expensive match gun. A buddy of mine picked up a beautiful match gun as his first and is not very happy with it. The tolerances are tight which is nice but the gun is very finicky with ammo. It also has a tendency to jam when dirty. Not sure if this is a common problem amongst match guns or just unique to his gun but its worth considering.

What kind of "match" gun? Check the ammo?
Usually if you pay a premium price for a "match" gun, you better make sure your ammo is up to par. Especially if using reloads.
If factory ammo is jamming then your buddy has got a real problem.

The springfield armory range officer model is good for the price. It has bells and whistles already added on...ready for uspsa match

It's a Springfield Armory Trophy Match. He tells me the problem is with his reloads, not the gun. He does say it requires constant cleaning to function flawlessly but what gun doesn't?

I think most 1911 people will tell you that it really depends on what ammo you use. I also have an SR1911, I have probably put ~500 rounds through it so far. Mostly 230gr FMJ ball ammo. The only time I ever had any issue was shooting some magtec stuff that was lead bullets with a flat nose. Had a few failure to return to battery.
As far as getting dirty, The most amount of ammo I put downrange without cleaning was 200 rounds or so at one time. But of course I clean the gun everytime I shoot it so it is not really a problem in regards to getting dirty.
I did polish the feed ramp since it was easy and free to do myself. I am sure every little bit of force saved loading a new round helps.
