Firearms and Accessories / Re: any pistol rec's?
« on: January 11, 2013, 01:47:04 PM »
Ah jumped in late to this conversation a bit late lol.  Most things have already been addressed by other members.  Best bet would be to either come to the HDF/HRA Fun Shoots or if you know anybody that owns a few to try to see if they'll go with you so you can try theirs out.  I usually ask them what their purpose is and try to go from there.  You mentioned primarily range shooting the secondary home defense.  Especially because you mentioned home defense I really advocate any defensive/dynamic handgun courses.

Fortunately we do not have so many violent crimes that involve home defense (wish Hawaii had low crimes in the first place), but just the mindset that you only have a few seconds to react, you want to make sure that your reaction is 2nd nature but rational.  So many times we've already heard in the news about incompetent CCW holders on the mainland, especially that one guy whom ran to a scene and arrived with his handgun upholstered and safety off and almost shot the guy that had originally subdued the shooter and took his gun.  Now a good CCW holder would have searched and assessed the situation before even drawing there firearm.  Since the law doesn't work in our favor here, you have to ensure that when you have a body alarm response and react to an aggressor, you know each round you send doesn't hit any bystanders whether it be someone in another room, or a neighbor... but of course call HPD first.

Competition / Re: US Army small arms championship

Damn kinda late notice.  To bad USARPAC or Hawaii Army National Guard don't host competitions anymore to promote Esprit de corps and give a chance for local Active, National Guard, and Reserve to represent our units and represent Hawaii as well.

Strategies and Tactics / Re: Home defense

IMO I'd stick to a handgun cause the above is true.  With a Shotgun there is two things, 1.  One less shotgun to use with skeet shooting 2.  The feeling of having to replace something that was hit with buck/bird/slug shot that either missed the target or went through (In the case of a slug).  That or having to fix the wall that it went in to cause the run/floor is going to have to be done irregardless.  Whatever you can use that you can drive it fast and accurately is what you should use.

General Discussion / Re: ak or ar?
« on: January 09, 2013, 02:20:25 PM »
Geez if the .300 Blackout became mainstream I would convert in a heartbeat.  AR vs AK comes down to preferences to you, your body type, etc.  It's like the 9mm vs .45 ACP.  For instance an M&P 9, for me I can drive that gun fast and accurate.  In a worst case scenario where I can no longer use my strong hand, I can still accurately shoot with my reaction hand or worst yet I become incapacitated and my wife has to defend my family, should would be more effective in driving that gun then say a knighthawk 1911 .45 ACP.  Same can be said about AR vs AK, in a worst case scenario which would you side with AR than AK.  Have you tried rubbing your hands with dishwasher soap and lightly handling your AR/AK (Unloaded and Safe of course) to simulate blood?  Unless you have grip tape on your AK, I was more effective in driving my AR than an AK.  Just my 2 cents.

I usually go there for the indoor range since it's the only place ATM practice engaging a target at X<15 yards.  Guys in the front are pretty chill IMO.
