I know this was talked about a while ago, but I cannot find the thread with the answer. If you already have a valid LTC in Hawaii, (any island) do you still need to wait 14 days for your background check to clear to purchase a new pistol? Or if you’re already a CCW holder, are you allowed to bypass that 14 day waiting Period?  I will call Big Island PD tomorrow to ask them, but figured I ask you guys first since they are currently closed.

Thanks

General Discussion / Is a Hawaii CCW valid on all islands?
« on: July 06, 2025, 11:44:21 PM »
Apologies, im sure this question has already beed asked and answered. Im just traveling last minute and are rushing to pack so I dont have time to look for this answer.  I plan to call HPD in the morning just to be sure but I thought a while back I read on one of these forums the new CCW’s are valid on all islands so long as it was issued after Jan 1st 2024.

I have a valid CCW from Hawaii County on the Big Island that was just issued to me last September. Prior to the new law my CCW was only valid on the Big island. With the new law that passed Jan 1st 2024, does that make CCW permits valid in any county no matter what Island it was issued.  My old CCW from 2023 specifically said it was only valid in Hawaii county. The new CCW I got in 2024 does not say that.

The first photo is my old expired CCW from 2023. It clearly states valid in Hawaii county on the Big Island Only On the back of the card.

The 2nd & 3rd photo is my new current valid CCW issued after the new 2024 law. It does days Hawaii County on the top but im assuming thats just where it was issues. It does not specify anywhere thats it is only valid in Hawaii County so Im assuming its valid in all counties on every Island.

If you can answer this thank you. Like I said, I will call HPD on Oahu monday before my flight just to make sure I don't make a mistake.

Hawaii County is supposed to be charging $150 as of this year as all applications this year are considered new applications.

But if no one says anything, then it’ll remain $50 or whatever. 👀

Idk. They took my $100 for my 2 renewals. Both of my LTC’s were issued under the old law. This is my first time applying/renewing with the new 2024 laws.  Tbh I wont be surprised if they tell me my license is ready but I gotta cough up an extra $50 lol. Just another hoop im obviously gonna jump through to get the damn license lol

Honolulu is recognizing the new 2024 laws and treats the application as a new application, not a renewal.

I thought the new 2024 firearm laws were statewide. I guess the different counties still have the power to make their own rules.  Oh well.

At this point, I’m almost certain you’re talking about Hawaii Police Department and not Honolulu Police Department. Honolulu charges $150; there are no renewals this year as the law has changed. Hawai’i should also be charging $150, but I’m not about to say anything.

Correct. Maybe I should have made that clear
In the beginning.  It is on Big Island.  I don’t see why that would Matter tho because the new law is a statewide law isn’t it?  Their website even states the LTC is valid statewide

That's not cool of HPD. They should already know who has one in their database, or once you picked up your license, they should have refunded you the $100.

I agree they should already know, then again HPD doesn’t want the public to carry so they will probably say its our responsibility to tell them we are renewing.  When I dropped off my application the girl was very friendly. She accepted my app as if I was applying for the first time.  I wouldn't expect her to know whether I was renewing or applying for the first time. She didn’t ask me a single question. Just made sure all my paperwork was filled out. It wasn’t until after I told her i was renewing my existing LTC that she told me it would only cost $50     i didn’t catch her name but she was really nice and would like to give her a shoutout.  She noticed one discrepancy on my application that she didn’t have to tell me about, but she did and I was able to make the correction. Both of my pistols are 9mm. The glock registration says the caliber is 9x19, the sig registration says the caliber is 9mm.  When I filled out my application I wrote down 9mm for the glock pistol caliber.  She said the new chief is so strict if the application doesn’t match the registration exactly, the person in charge will deny my application and make me reapply all over again. Luckily I printed out 2 copies and was able to re-fill out that one page for the glock and listed the caliber as 9x19 to match my registration. Crazy how 9x19 and 9mm is the same thing but the chief will deny the app for something that minor. Really appreciate this woman for taking the time to read through my entire application to make sure it shouldn’t get pushed back.  Its a good thing I didn’t catch her name because I wouldn’t be surprised if she got in trouble for helping me out.

they charged me $150 to renew also

Did you tell them you already have a valid LTC for that pistol. And that you are just renewing it? They lady told me they only charge $150 if that pistol was never registered as a CCW pistol

Im about to renew my LTC. HPD said if I already have a LTC it only cost $50 to renew it. It’s only $150 for first time applicants. Im dropping off my application to renew 2 LTC’s tomorrow. Hopefully it really is only $50 per pistol.

Yes. Paid $150 for 4 years CCW. I was told that I can add as much handgun I want within the 4 years period but all will expire at the same date. HPD said LTC overlapping is not possible with new 2024 law.

aww man no way.   On the bright side at lease the LTC’s are good for 4 years. did you have to pay $150 for each pistol or just $150 for both?

What I gathered from a few different sources including HIFICO, is that Even though My LTC was issues in January of 2024, all of my firearm training was completed years ago prior to 2024 and even through the Issued date on my LTC says 1/11/2024 Because I applied for it in December 2023 my LTC falls under the old rules and is only valid for 1 year on the Big Island Only.

I am re-taking my safety classes this month and when I renew my LTC the new one will fall under the new 2024 law and be good for 4 years on any Island.

@KEKOA makes a good point about carrying a copy of your firearm registration along with your LTC card with you when you travel to another island because that counties PD might not be aware you have a valid license to carry from a different Island. I’m sure there is a way for them to contact the issuing county and verify all the info is valid but maybe providing a copy of the firearm registration along with your LTC will help expedite the process. I’d hate to get pulled over for a traffic violation on another island and have to spend hours waiting for HPD to validate my LTC. I keep a copy of all my firearm registrations on the files app of my phone.

I also have 2 separate CCW permits that I purposely waited and applied for 4 months a part. That way when one LTC expires and is in the renewal process, I still have a valid LTC for my 2nd pistol so I don't have to go months unarmed.

Thanks for all the info guys.  Sucks we gotta pay for new training but whatever, at least we can stay strapped.

General Discussion / New 2024 Hawaii gun law and CCW questions
« on: September 08, 2024, 07:33:48 PM »
Hoping you folks can answer this for me. I’ve already called HPD on Oahu, Hilo and 4
different firearms instructors but none of them could give me a straight answer. The instructors all told me they would have to look into it and get back to me.

I already have 2 CCW permits from prior to the new 2024 law changes but I will have to renew them this year, so my CCW applications for this year should just be considered renewals and not a new application. (No clue if that matters or not)

Questions:

1. If I only take the CCW training course and proficiency test, is that affidavit sufficient enough for me to purchase new firearms?  Or do I still need to take the Basic pistol safety class in order to purchase new pistol and long guns.  One instructor told me if I only take the CCW class and proficiency test with him that would be good for both CCW and new firearm purchases.

2. Does the new CCW have County/island reciprocity, meaning if I get my CCW permit in Hawaii county on the big Island, can I CCW on Oahu or Maui using that same permit, or would I have to get separate CCW permits for each island?

3. Do I still need 2 separate CCW permit cards for the 2 firearms I carry? or are they allowing is to carry just one CCW permit with multiple firearms listed on one card?

Thanks in advanced. Ill also be emailing HIFICO to see if they can answer these questions.

But as for the OP ..

I ordered some ar15 30 rd mags a couple weeks ago and its on its way.

I checked today... Put in cart etc... And it works but didnt order. If theres a problem.. When you choose shipping method it'll prevent you from going any further.
Ask me how I know?😂

This is midway.

You’re right, midway accepted my order. I must have been mistaken about them. Gunmagwarehouse has always been my go to.  Thanks

A couple years ago the attorney general sent letters out to the internet retailers saying that high cap magazines were illegal in Hawaii and they shouldn't be shipped here. A lot of the companies didn't want the fight or didn't look closely at the law and no longer would ship to Hawaii. Even if it is for a rifle and perfectly legal they seem to not be willing to ship.

Bummer.  I probably got enough mags to last me a lifetime. Just wanted to test out some new 22lr mags and drum with my CMMG conversion.  I tried gunmagwarehouse, primary arms and midway. None would ship them. All 3 of them shipped to me before. Going to try optics planet and  gunbroker as a last resort.

I’ve ordered many rifle mags over10+ rounds the past few years. Tried to order more from 3 different websites last week, but it seems they won’t ship to Hawaii anymore.  Is this because of the new bill that hasn’t passed yet?  I see them available in LGS.
