Here an update article I read in my HHAA news letter.
KOKO HEAD SHOOTING COMPLEX UPDATE (as of May 2012) * Submitted by DARRYL CHOY
Currently, a rash of rumors has been circulating regarding the City Administration's plans for the Range. Most of the rumors are negative to shooters and unconfirmed. What is known to be proposed is the hourly organization fees and individual user fees mentioned in prior newsletters. All of these appear to be shelved for now and are all (including any Range restrictions) subject to public hearings if actually and formally proposed.
What is confirmed is a discussion at City Hall regarding funding to replace the damaged Rifle Range roof and conduct other Range repairs. Additionally, on May 9, 2012, the City Council, with a 9 to 0 vote, adopted Resolution 12-93 that urges the City Administration to develop a public and private partnership for the operation and maintenance of the Koko Head Shooting Complex for a minimum term of 15 years. This proposal has both negative and positive effects on the relevant organizations and the individual shooter.
On May 29th, the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board listed the following as a new business agenda item:
At the meeting it was alleged that two homeowners discovered bullets on their roofs when photo voltaic systems were installed. The "age" of the bullets was not affirmed. The
discovery was reported to the police, and the report indicated they were military- or law enforcement-type bullets. One homeowner was concerned that the police never got back to him. Also mentioned was the very old report of bullets discovered at Hanauma Bay. At one point, the Board discussion became a bit heated and Chair Greg Knudsen was asked to step down as chair since the Range appeared to be his personal pet peeve. He finally acquiesced for that agenda item, and the meeting continued. Approximately 15 shooting sport devotees attended the meeting. About five testified and pointed out that the Range is safe. One said he felt safer at the Range than on the highway.
Chair Knudsen concluded that he was not trying to close the Range and just wanted to improve its safety. However, this was contrary to how it appeared at the start of the meeting. The outcome was a Board request that Park Director Cabato meet with all of the shooting-interest clubs to discuss realistic safety issues. But unfazed by the lukewarm support from his Board on Thursday night, Knudsen held his own press conference on May 31st which broadcasted on Channel 9 News. He continued his claim that the Range is dangerous, and again stated he doesn't want to close the Range. This is disingenuous at best.
The Board meeting agenda and minutes are available on its website, and the meeting can be viewed on the Olelo Channel. *****************************************************************************************************************
