Do you think the christmas lights add more to the electrical usage than the hot water heater?

If you understood anything about home energy use, the majority of homes use the most energy when heating water.  That's why most homes that have more than 1 or 2 residents install solar-electric water heaters.

To compare that to ANY OTHER energy consuming system or device is irrelevant, since the comparison to a water heater will always have the heater come out on top of energy usage.

Having said that, I'd bet $20 the homes already have a solar water heating system.  Some may also have PV systems.  That's not the point.  The Christmas lights are a night-time extravagance, and therefore are not using solar electric power.  And unless batteries are now in common use for PV in that area, no sense going there, either.

When we conducted energy surveys in Hawaii, the first recommendation before any PV or AC installs was to replace the electric water heater with solar.

So, the water heater argument is ridiculous.  If they are using all electric energy to heat their water AND run their massive holiday light displays, then they are even bigger hypocrites than I thought!

BTW, "hot water heater" is an oxymoron.  You don't need to heat hot water.  Hot water is already hot.  You either need a cold water heater or a hot water cooler.

And we could always say they are hypocrites for wanting hot water. When people are on opposing tribes they will find any way to make the other side look bad, thats all I am saying.

There are some things that are a neccessity, like hot water. Adding lights to a tree can be cut if they were seriois about being green. But their water heater better be an energy effecient model and have PV if they live in a house. Or theyre just hypocrites.

Like how our former resident climate change and green expert wasnt any greener than i am, and i wasnt even trying like how he is.

Your hypotheticals are as old as they are irrelevant.

Just for the record, myself as a landlord, I am required by law to provide running water and hot water to my tenants. While it might not be a requirement by law as a homeowner to provide yourself with hot water, the law does require a certain level of livability if you have children. And the children could be taken away if it is found you are not providing certain basics. And I believe hot water is considered one of those basics. JMHO

I don't like hypocrisy any more than the next guy but even I find that when people get in their tribes, many will find any way to paint the other side negatively to make some point and it can just be drawn out forever. I prefer to focus on the big things that would make big differences than the petty things.

It's a good thing this topic isn't about what you prefer to focus on.
