If someone is going to break the law, it should be in furtherance of civil liberties or a need greater than the risk of penalties for noncompliance.

Someone robbing a liquor store isn't exercising their liberty by defying the law.  Same for rapists, murderers, and home invaders.

I believe refusing to follow any law -- including those banning certain fireworks -- should not be characterized as "telling the gov't to go f themselves."  They are merely indulging themselves because enforcement of certain laws lets them get away with it.  Nothing more.

Kind of like having 30 rd mags for your AR.  It's not an act of defiance when an ambiguous law isn't being enforced.

Yeah but WHY is it selectively enforced? Is it just laziness or a tacit recognition of how fragile their power base really is?

I think because the law was poorly crafted -- in the case of mag limits.  Carving out an exception for "long guns for which there is not a handgun capable of using the same mag" was evidence of a lawmaking body with little understanding of firearms and the engineering involved.  By also banning "assault pistols" it muddied the waters.  Since nobody can possess such a pistol, it's illogical to ban the magazines they would have/could have used.  But the law wasn't written for logic.  So, rather than worry about enforcing it, they simply keep it as an additional charge should someone be arrested for other crimes.  But, carry a 17 round mag in your Glock 17, and any Cop that finds out will show no hesitation in cuffing and stuffing you.

As for fireworks, an arrest and conviction requires they know who possessed them and who set them off.  Without witnesses or video evidence to use in court, the Cops are all but powerless to do anything.  This year, there were ads from HPD saying if you see someone with illegal fireworks, report them.  HPD needs your help to enforce the laws.

Without citizens helping them enforce the law, I guess they can't enforce it on their own to the degree needed to put a stop to it.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

if God said he will grant us immortality if we all just stopped lighting illegal fireworks for ONE year we would f8ck it up. Based on my observations and interactions with people here would trade 2a rights for fireworks rights. There's likely more firework injuries than firearms injuries this past year.
I remember back in the 80s when there were such things as firework vendors setup in private parking lots etc. the illegal fireworks problem wasn't as bad as now. Its when they started piling on laws when it got worse. Or maybe its a stupid Hawaii culture thing. If costs of living are so high we got our priorities all wrong.

It's obvious that people want fireworks, knowing the risks,  in Hawaii so they should be made legal.  State can tax it and educate people about fireworks safety.

Can't really enforce a ban on fireworks when LE and Fire are some of the ones playing them.

My area was much lighter this year. Started later, ended earlier, and significantly fewer shells during the big send off.

I heard a rumor that HPD was going to be flying drones to catalog peoples areas who were launching illegal fireworks.

I'm not sure how accurate that rumor is, but around 1120PM-ish, besides quad-rotor drones, I did see about 5 fixed wing drones flying over the Waipahu area, circling about.

On another line of thought, this years explosions did feel slightly less compared to last years.

That is what I like about you. You are one of the few sane voices commenting here.
Just because some a$$ makes a law doesn't make it so
 :wtf:

Work to make it safer for all and tolerate the people that don't act the way you want them to.
Hawaii and many other states, haven't figured that out yet. They are all control freaks.

I wouldn't be surprised if HPD bought fixed wing drones, along with ATVs for the beach and Camera dogs for places they don't want to personally go.

no they were piloted planes
fixed wing "drones" require more 'piloting'

Well if they were piloted planes, they did a good job in their maneuvers.  Flight path wise, 2 would trail one and they pretty much branched and circled specific spots around Waipahu.
I think some drone vids on Youtube may have caught  a plane in view here or there. but no high res quality.

But looking up from the ground, I guess I dismissed them as drones due to size.

Edit: The rumor about HPD buying drones, was from this KITV article that friend sent, I know its dated, but that's how rumors always snowball.
