I've been using a Crosman Quest 800 break barrel .22, 800fps
i just hold my flashlight in my left hand while aiming, and forehead flashlight
open sights

maybe i will try the red light next
once i get off a shot, the rat or rats scatter and thats it for a couple hours, until they come back
mine are in the mango tree and a bush next to the tree, hard to keep sight of them up there

I couldnt get mine to shoot accurately

When Wake Island was overrun with rats we took a wide range of break-barrel piston rifles there to help eradicate the vermin.   My simple setup was a Benjamin Nitro in .22 with a suitable scope, cheap green laser, and 300 lumens flash light.   We'd grab some lawn chairs and head to the dump to spotlight the little buggahs a few hours each night.    I'm sure we smoked hundreds of these little (and big) bastards but didn't come close to making a dent in the 100,000+ population (back in 2010).   That simple setup seemed to work quite well, most of them simply went "deer in the headlights" & were quickly dispatched.   One thing worth mentioning, the rats eventually learned to run as soon as we broke the barrel to load & charge the piston.   After a short wait they'd come back out & get popped.

Here's an article I read a few months ago when I for started thinking about ratting.  It gives the low down on caliber selection.

That sounds like fun.  My mom had a friends whose husband did it at the mall food courts.  I thought that was the coolest job ever.

As kids we used to go out to a pig farm to shoot rats at night.  We used .22s or 38s with birdshot and a maglite--good fun!  Later, I bought my 4" .44 Smith primarily to shoot rats and it was deadly at close range.  I still have that revolver, but sadly the pig farm closed years ago.

Set it up Speed !

Prizes for biggest and most.

Just recently picked up a Stoeger Atac Suppressor with 4-16 Stoeger scope from OGC during their sale.

It's really quiet for a break-barrel. ( it's the same as the one 338kid camo'd in the where to find camo paint thread. )

A friend of mine and I would be interested in this... My friend used to get invited to shoot rodents at a zoo (not Honolulu Zoo) at night.
I think, therefore I am armed.

I just use the old fashion bucket trap.  Caught one tonite with a tail at least 8-10" long.
simple large bucket fill halfway with water.  Pour sunflower seeds  to cover entire water surface.   Place a stick as ramp to top of the bucket. Check every so often.

.  hound, actually that's a pic my son sent me from Idaho,  I guess they're called whistle pigs, looks like big rats to me lol he and his friend spent a day hunting them and selling the pelts to a fur trader for enough to recoup ammo cost.  Fun times!

Thank goodness I can't mount a rail on the barrel. I know speedtek did suggest I JB weld one to it but it has a rubber coating on it . What I would mount on it can't fall off .  :D
