Maybe we will just shoot out in the woods.   Got to do some homework on that.  Or we might go to a range with some slugs.

I know some people shoot on invited private land which I understand to be legal. Don't think it's legal to go onto public land and shoot trees. They'd call that endangering and pull your permit AFAIK. There's designated hunting areas like on Pali but need a hunting license to shoot a gun there, right?

I am talking about my trip to Alaska.  I found Knik River Public use area as a place to go.  I want my son to experience the way things were when I was a kid.  We went to Big 5 or Kmart and bought guns and ammunition and went outside the city and shot up some cans.  The KMART checker didn't look at us funny for buying a case of 12 gauge shells.   I don't even remember my dad being present when I bought my Remington 870 when I was about 14.

Oh. I know we weren't allowed to shoot in the woods in Washington State. I went out with my neighbor and his shotgun to shoot at birds, you know, for fun. The local game warden showed up and confiscated his shotgun. That's the benefit of subsonic silencer firearms, if you can get a silencer.

I am a strong believer in knowing the laws and following them.  With the Internet, there is little excuse for not doing your homework ahead of time.  If Alaska let's me have a hassle free time, that sounds good to me.  It is just as close as the west coast.  It might become my second home like the other poster said.

The point of this trip is not to get around Hawaii gun laws.  I want to take my son to a shooting range when on vacation.  The public range does not have gun rentals.  So I thought I would buy a gun. I can easily scrap the plan because we are going to be doing a lot of other things.   But I can't imagine that I would run afoul of any Hawaii law if I buy a gun when I am in Alaska to go to the shooting range.   Since I paid for the gun and own it, I want to bring it home.  Is there anyone that thinks I need to get a Hawaii permit to acquire to bring the gun home?   I am serious about the question (it is not an argument).  Please let me know if there is any difference of opinion on this from anyone that you know of.

Everything should be fine. I've done it three or four times. What's crucial is to get the HPD first thing to start the process, bring receipt and ticket stub ( don't offer it unless they ask. I was only asked once) and yes as Suka said, $42 clams for rapback....

I suggest bringing your boy out to the Shooting Sports Fair coming up in a few days.
Think of it as the 50th State Fair with guns...tons of guns.
Bring ear and eye protection and some cash.

     Just my 2 sense here.
Thought the .410 is a fun little shotty, but ammo is more expensive, they're not the best for shooting clay's (but can be done) and I'm not sure about shooting at the steel range with them so that may limit your options when you return.
(My first gun was a over and under .22-.410  )

      I recommend a .22.
10/22 is probably the standard in .22's highly custom-able, and can be shot at the rifle range or the steel range.
My preference would lean to a nice bolt .22 especially for a first gun
One shot makes you concentrate more    and does add some safety factor to the occasion instead of spitting out 10 rnds as fast as you can in a 10/22 

    Of course another option if your gonna really suck the kid into shooting the latest and greatest would be something in an .22  AR platform  (CMMG, M & P 15/22) but I think the 10/22 or bolt are the best for first time.

Minor off-topic rant... then I'll retire to the sidelines again. When I spoke with Hawaii County District Attorney Mitch Roth about shooting (mostly .22LR as steel challenge practice) on my 4 acre property he told me he thought that would be illegal because of the proximity of residences in the area. I then asked him if it would be illegal to shoot airguns, especially those that shoot larger caliber, higher weight projectiles at higher muzzle velocities than the .22LR. "There is no law against that." So something with less range and lower velocity and weight is illegal (.22LR) ("danger to public safety"), but something with greater range, higher velocity, and greater weight IS LEGAL. The only possible way that could be logically consistent and rational (well, sort of, barely, kinda) is if the "public danger" was deemed to be the volume level.    And they wonder why people don't respect the law and those who enforce it?

I agree it makes no sense. I think it comes down to the neighbors not wanting to hear the firearm bang rather than how dangerous the firearm is.
