I appreciate if someone could tell me if I got things straight.

I owned guns on the mainland before.  Back in the day.  So guns aren't a new thing for me.

I will be in Alaska this summer and I want to take son to public range to fire off some rounds.  I plan on going into Walmart and buying a 22 and a box of ammo.  Like I did when I was a kid.

I will shoot off all the rounds at the range.  Put the rifle in a hard case.  And check it in my luggage.

When I get back home, the next day,  I will take the rifle unloaded in the hard case into HPD with my Walmart receipt and ask them to register it.

Is there anything else I need to Do?

Thanks for the reply.  Just talked to a  guy in the sporting goods section in the Anchorage Walmart.  He asked me my state.  I told him Hawaii.  He said should be no problem as long as you have a physical address on the drivers license.

Get regular non TSA locks for firearms. Every Tom, Dick and Harry in the airports have keys to them. Use regular, decent locks on the case. If TSA needs to look inside, they'll get ahold of you. Alaska is like my second home, flew into Los Anchorage and Fairbanks hundreds of times. Pretty akamai about people flying with firearms. I have purchased and bought back quite a few firearms from AK. Another place you can check out is Fred Myers....usually have a great selection. One thing to remember..when you get back to Hawaii, get it registered immediately. Keep your ticket stub to prove to the HPD nit wits that you just flew in. Wait no longer that 24-48 hours and I'd bring in all the paperwork from where you bought it as well. Good luck....

Thanks for the info.  I will check out Fred Meyers.  Maybe I'll scratch the plan on the 22.  And find a low cost hunting rifle that we can have more fun with at the range.

The point of this trip is not to get around Hawaii gun laws.  I want to take my son to a shooting range when on vacation.  The public range does not have gun rentals.  So I thought I would buy a gun. I can easily scrap the plan because we are going to be doing a lot of other things.   But I can't imagine that I would run afoul of any Hawaii law if I buy a gun when I am in Alaska to go to the shooting range.   Since I paid for the gun and own it, I want to bring it home.  Is there anyone that thinks I need to get a Hawaii permit to acquire to bring the gun home?   I am serious about the question (it is not an argument).  Please let me know if there is any difference of opinion on this from anyone that you know of.

I think the thing I'd be worried about is the Walmart policy. 

Even if the law allows them to sell long guns to out-of-state buyers, Walmart may exclude buyers from specific states (so you can't go around the permit to acquire requirements), or they can simply refuse all out-of-state firearms sales.

I'm sure you can call the stores in the area you will be visiting and ask for a copy of their firearms sales policies.  Hate to get there and have to waste time looking for a gun dealer that will sell to you.

Hawaii State laws does not have jurisdiction in another State. Thus you only need a permit if you wish to buy a firearm within the State of Hawaii.

Individual Store may have their own policies. Almost all dealers refuse to sell anything to California residents in Alaska.

I called Walmart in Anchorage.  The guy in sporting goods asked me what state.  He said Hawaii not a problem.

I am now leaning towards picking up a single shot 410 for about a hundred bucks. This is a first time shooting experience for a kid.  Maybe we will just shoot out in the woods.   Got to do some homework on that.  Or we might go to a range with some slugs.

If you don't have enough eye/ear protection for everyone, they sell them there for a couple of bucks.
