Not sure if you considered this but I was making the same decision as you a couple of years ago and I said screw it and went with a 26! I'm 6'3" and 330 with real big hands and I love the feel. I've always had unorthodox thoughts about the hand size vs pistol size issue. Everyone seems to tow the conventional thought line about big/small hands only matching big/small pistols, but I've always felt - from actual personal experience - that as far as comfort and accuracy, big hands can handle big AND small pistols where as small hands should stick to small pistols. Yeah I've had my 110lb girlfriend shoot my AMT automag .50 and .454 casull but I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about for SD, HD, target, etc.
I have a 17, 21, and a 26 with that ergo mag floor plate pinky rest extension and they're all cozy to shoot - different, but I love the tiny 26. I also have a chiappa 200ds 2" snub which is about identical to the 26 if not a bit smaller and it fits my hand perfectly.
If you live in HI and you're not worried about serious target or match quality, only about SD/HD/CC and basic range fun, why not go subcompact?
