Saiga 12 vs VEPR 12
« on: July 30, 2013, 12:53:00 AM »
Ok so I decided to shoot my Saiga 12 and my VEPR 12 to see which I like better.

The Saiga 12 is the standard "rock and lock" Saiga without the upgraded mag well.

The VEPR 12 comes standard with the mag well and requires no rocking into place like most AK type of firearms.
Other improvements include a self regulating gas system that doesn't require any tinkering with like a lot of Saiga 12's do.
The VEPR has an improved safety that makes it easier to engage and disengage the safety.

I brought a variety of ammo including 2&3/4" and 3" shells.
#7 bird shot, 00 Buck, 000 Buck, 1 oz slugs and 7/8 oz slugs.

I started off with birdshot. A lot of semi auto shotguns have problems reliably cycling cheap birdshot.
Not so with these 2 shotguns. They gobbled 25 rounds each without even batting an eye.
Next we shot some 00 buckshot. 25 rounds in each shotgun. As expected they had no problem with buckshot.
We went back to birdshot, then onto slugs. At 50 yards, they made silver dollar size groups.
I didn't put a target at 100 yards but the shotguns seemed to hit wherever I was aiming at 100. (Give or take a couple inches)

We mixed bird, buck and slugs to see if we could induce a malfunction. Couldn't do it.

After over 100 rounds out of each shotgun, I came to a couple conclusions.

1) The factory buttstock hurts the shoulder a lot more than my aftermarket Magpul stock.
2) I really like the VEPR's features more than my Saiga.
3) Shooting a couple hundred rounds of shotgun ammo leaves a nice red mark where the stock meets the body.
4) Most importantly, I learned that both shotguns were reliable, accurate and fun. They are very similar in function and I appreciated both of them.
If I were forced to pick only one, I would take the VEPR-12 because its the "latest and greatest" but you won't go wrong with either one.

My cell phone died so I didn't take any range pictures but I will include as many pics as I can muster of the shotguns, tomorrow.

dollar sized groups @ 50? impressive. shooting from bench? what kind of optics were you using?

when me and my friend shot his saiga with no optics we got 1 hit on target out of 3 or 4 boxes of slugs, and I think that was on accident lol

Did you have to adjust the gas tube on the saiga between the different ammo?

Nope. I installed a reliability kit on the Saiga 12 and it eats everything without any adjustment now

I just used the gas puck and the spring with the stock dial and it runs perfectly.

http://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/product_p/css-reliabilty-kit.htm

You can buy the spring and puck separately and it costs $27.95 plus shipping.

Thanks for the info., KK. I've been looking at both and was leaning towards the VEPR due to the Saiga's problems w/ cycling some loads w/out adjustments. Guess I'll be buying a VEPR as soon as I pay off some bills.

Lastly, what are your thoughts on the VEPR's hard plastic top rail? I've heard the ergonomics are good for mounting optics, but that the material (plastic) leaves a lot to be desired. Do you think wear and tear would cause the rail to crack over time?

I used 5 and 10 round mags for both shotguns.

Both red dots are mounted on rails on top of the shotguns.

The VEPR has its own rail, the Saiga rail I had to install aftermarket.

Great review. I have a vepr too that I haven't fired yet and was wondering if you had any problems with the bolt holding open after the last round?

No problems with Molot 5 round, Molot 10 round and SGM 12 round mags so far.

Do you know if there's a way to make the 12 round SGM mags eject the same way the the factory mags eject? They eject with some force.I find it a little difficult to insert and eject the 12 round mags without having it stick a little in the magwell. Could there be some sort of modification to have the same factory results?

Molot makes a 10 round mag? I thought they only make 5 and 8 round mags. Last I saw the 8 round molot was close to 90 bucks and out of stock. The extra two rounds should make it clear 100.

I think they're coming out with a steel saiga 12 mag too.
