From what I recall, the range at Magnum/HNL is always packed on weekends.

It would seem a no brainer to have an indoor range, even just one lane, as cash generator. Bring your own ammo, not like over at Ward, and maybe rent the lane for 30 mins at a time.

In all honesty probably because it makes too much sense.  That and the majority culture here is not gun friendly at all (I remember while I was living in HK, in the elevator going to the range this woman stared at me in horror and disgust at the sight of my LOCKED rifle case).  It's libtards like that woman in the elevator who ruin freedom for all.

they havent rebuilt the race track in 6 years so far.  just bc they dont have to.
same reason they dont change the gun registering site, bc they dont have to.

I was considering opening a private indoor range in Kapolei, maybe as a retirement or side job.  However it would cost a lot of money to setup, and ranges by themselves don't make much money unless you have alot of tourists coming through.  Also requires costly maintenance and insurance and upkeep.  You'd be screwed if there is an ammo shortage or someone commits suicide on your range.

I was under the impression that OGC has been trying to get an indoor range going for some time.  I've heard rumors circulating that C&C of Honolulu has been giving them guff with a lot of red tape and zoning issues of some sort.  No clue if its still in the works or not.

I was in an elevator one time in the apartment building in Honolulu where I live, and a guy was carrying what seemed quite obviously a rifle case.

It was just me and him.

I said to him in a friendly way, "Is that a rifle you got there?"

I was intending to chat him up about it as he was obviously a neighbor.

But he seemed very awkward and just laughed and said "Something like that."

I could sense that he thought I would be one of those anti-gunners, or just somehow it was not kosher to talk about guns in public.

Why not charge tourists $2.00 per shot?

When I visited X-Ring Security a month-and-a half ago, it still had plans to build an indoor range. Plans were delayed because the owner was considering the acquisition of nearby land to build the range rather than the existing facility. I hope those plans are still moving forward. Lord knows that guys on the Leeward side could use a closer facility than what's available now.

Personally, I have my eye on some land just south of Haliewa Town. It has a mountain backstop and seems ideal. I just need a million dollars to buy it, then need to get it rezoned. After that, I can start building a facility and letting folks shoot for a reasonable fee. Should be able to shoot 500 yards!  Between construction costs, taxes, and interest on the mortgage, I expect 3 million dollars to be the bottom line. Divided over 30 years and rounded down, I only need to earn 2000 dollars a week to break even. Oh, before insurance and maintenance.  So if I can count on 200 shooters a week, that's a minimum range fee of 100 dollars per visit.

On the topic of running into folks in elevators, I was headed back up from a range trip with my soft rifle case when an older fellow got on.  This was a few weeks after the shootings in Aurora, CO.  Guy looks at the case, then at me and says, "Oh, going to the movies?"  I don't know if that guy had the world's darkest sense of humor or if he was trying to imply all gun owners are psychopaths with that one.

I think we need to start thinking of smart but also logical and not offense comebacks, the aim not to retort but to open up the minds of these people so they go back home and think about it and maybe one day they will go and be a firearms owner.

Elevators are hard because you only have literally seconds before everyone leaves but also maybe good because then you can't get into a long debate.

For example, some of my overseas friends give me "by the way" kind of comments regarding "America." For instance, "America is ok except for you guys's problem with gun ownership."

My reply usually tries to show them that their assumptions about the people who own guns is wrong and is narrow minded due to media influence or other misunderstanding: "Yes, we have a gun ownership problem because it seems like most people in the world do not understand why owning firearms is such an important responsibility of a citizen which, of course, is why we have the famous Second Amendment, right after the Freedom of Expression."

When I say this it often shocks them a little, but they would usually ask me to explain further, and I do. This avoids the back and forth nastiness. Of course you can't be giving this reply in a negative tone of voice or seem to patronize them.

But we should have friendly comebacks for public encounters. Getting into a pissing match is also bad for the image of gun owners. ("See! I knew you guys are all psychos!")
