Hello Holo - You guys prefer Red Dot or Holo?

So, let's discuss the merits of holographic sights.

In particular, I am interested to hear your thoughts on the Eotech sights.

I have red dot (RMR) but not holo.

One thing I don't like about the red dot (at least for the reflected RMR style) is that you can see the LED from the other side. Might give you away.

For the holo sight, the recticle does not look "sharp" but I read that it has to do with your own eyes, not the holo image.

What do you guys think?

I'm not a fan of Eotechs.  I've seen a fair amount poop out.  I've yet to see an Aimpoint bite the dust.

I think I recall reading that a while back too.

Is this Eotechs in the battlefield? Or just in general that their mean time between failures is not impressive even for home defense users?

My first gun has an EoTech 512 and now all of my guns have either a T-1 or a Comp M4s.  When I bought my first AR, I liked the look of the EoTech better.  The 65 MOA ring and the 1 MOA dot and it worked really well.  I still believe the EoTech is an excellent optic, but I now prefer the Aimpoint Micro for durability, lightweight, compact and excellent battery life.

I've seen EoTechs fails during competition, training sessions and general range use.  I've seen one Aimpoint T-1 fail during a carbine class where it lost the ability to adjust windage. I've also seen a brand new Trijicon Accupoint fail during a carbine class when it could change POI on any setting other than 1x.  So quality optics can and will fail, just that at a much lower rate than their cheaper counterparts.

I've never seen a red dot sight where you can see the dot or reticle from the muzzle side.  However, I don't have much experience with RMRs.  You may very well may be able to see the dot from the muzzle side, but I generaly try to stay on the other side of the gun.   :D

Thanks for the comments.

Regarding RMR, yes you can see the LED dot (from muzzle side) but probably not when you are very far away.

This is not Eotechs on the battlefield.  I've also seen several different Eotechs (say about 4) eat it on club events.  I'm not talking run around events, I'm talking light shooting.  Fuzzy reticles, failure to turn on, spontaneous off without ability to go back on, etc.  Several different issues.

My personal Eotech also had some hazing issues due to moisture intrusion.  The Eotech that is supposed to be submersible to 66 ft.  Eotech did not cover it under warranty.  I ended up paying for it to be fixed, then just sold it.

I can't use red dot since I'm mostly color blind and it blends into the feild of vision.   Holo point I can see long as its on the brightest setting.   But since my vision is going I need magnified

Agree with the above as for my case I love the Eotech but.... my eyes is getting bad from using the computer too much;  the circle with the single dot in the middle becomes a blurry glob that cover up the target. With eye glasses everything is crisp and clear, but consider you lost your glasses or broke em then consider those possibility.

BTW I can't react fast enough with irons ( I guess I'll try painting the front post to see if it helps)

With a 2 MOA red dot even though the dot starts to have a star bust flare look to it without wearing corrective vision, at least the reticule become too busy like an Eotech.

for my needs
1. how well my eyes can pick up the reticule (RDS/HOLO suppose to be fast acquisition to react a timely matter not aiming like it was a scope)
2. battery life ( cost of replacing batteries add up when buying not so common batteries or when the battery runs out of juice at the wrong time)
3 Durability (as stated I have a difficult time with irons, so I want to make sure my optics can last where I don't need to resort to irons; also replacing an optic is expensive)
4. Weight (depend on your needs here)
5. Price (not a concern for me; learn how to save up/deals/patience "buy once cry once")

I am currently using primary arms RDS withe the multi reticle(aimpoint clone) and testing out the reticles for 2 years to see which one my eyes can work with better, so my next optic for me is the aimpoint m3

For fast acquisition with pistol iron sights, may I suggest you guys consider a night sight with high visibility color, such as the Trijicon HD series for pistols (tritium is built in).

http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product1.php?id=HDNS

I am sure there are other brands that may be just as good, but I have not researched them and I just go with the good brand name. I got Trijicon night sights on my pistols, and an ACOG with RMR for my AR.

As for rifle tritium iron sights, I use TROY battle sights. I had the magpul BUIS but those were not tritium.

I had eotechs, but did not work good for me.  When shooting distance on a very sunny bright day, it is very hard to see the dot (even at max intensity) with eotech, especially when the background is light (white)...so ended up using regular 1-4x scope...better!
