Buying A Handgun Online w/ Mags
« on: August 26, 2013, 06:51:03 PM »
Hey everyone, I don't know is this is the right place to post this but I was looking at getting a handgun from an online site and it comes with 3 15 round mags.  If I purchased it would they ship the mags and leave it up to me to have them altered to 10 round mags or would they just not ship them.  Thanks for the help in advance.   :shaka:

Most times they will ship but you have to find a FFL that will block the mags when they come in.

An FFL as a Federally Licensed Holder can bring in hi-cap mags for sale to Anyone with arresting powers.

If you are a NON-LAW then they would have to be blocked before giving them to you.

Depends on the site.

Many sites will not ship a gun with standard cap mags to Hawaii.

If the gun comes with low cap mags, they'll ship it but if you buy one with a standard magazine that takes more than 10 rounds, they'll just cancel your order.

I've experienced this first hand.

I didn't try to buy high cap mags.

I bought a gun because it was a great deal.

I didn't need the mags and told them they could keep them.

They refused to keep the mags or switch them to 10 rounders.

Some sellers are more reasonable that those mentioned.

I have a friend here who was going to order a Glock 21.  All Gen 4 come with 3 mags, AFAIK (based on 2 Gen 4's I've bought).

From the factory, they can substitute 10-rounders, and you get all 3 mags.

From some vendors, they will swap out the mags for TWO 10 rounders.  The vendor now has 3 std mags he can sell to compensate him for the extra effort and expense of ordering and delivering 2 10 rounders.  Basically, you are out a $25 Glock mag.

I would recommend checking with LGS on island and see what that gun with legal mags will cost.  If not in stock, check on the cost of special ordering.

Weigh that against the cost of ordering off-island, maybe paying credit card fees, shipping to Hawaii, local FFL fees, and blocking/swapping mags - maybe losing one mag in the swap.

I agree with this.

Most manufactures have different model#s based on the type of restrictions implemented.
If you try to purchase one that is not designated to your state, they probably wont let you purchase it.

Sometimes its better to just order it from your LGS. Most likely they can get any version and have the magazines blocked.

95% of the time I buy local.

Occasionally, I find a super deal on a used gun.

The LGS can NOT order from the used gun factory, the same exact gun.

In the case I'm referencing, A online vendor had a 5906 in pristine condition for $300 delivered.

I immediately "bought it", paid for it and contacted my FFL to do the transfer.

I then received a call from the vendor and they told me that they're canceling my order because the pistol has "high cap" mags.

I told them to keep the mags, I didn't need them. (I have plenty 10 rounders)

They said they can't do that. I then said they could swap out the mag for 10 rounders, and I'd even pay for the 10 round mags. They wouldn't do that either.

They said their only option was to cancel the order and return my money.

 :grrr: <--- my reaction.

I bought mine thru GunBroker.  FFL / Mainland storefront had a blurb stating that they will not ship nor sub out hi cap mags to gun restricted states... "Hawaii" LOL..

Well when i got the gun it had the mags and as others have stated my FFL said he would have to block the mags for me.

This is what i've experienced as well.  Every time i inquire about a gun that has standard cap mags, they never want to send it to hawaii.
