This would fall under the assault pistol category and would not be legal unless the magazine was welded on.
I am not a lawyer.

I assume that you have to sell it before coming down because it's illegal here. Now what happens if you didn't know the law and brought it down here. Would you have to forfeit it or can you sell it back somewhere in the Mainland.
Google it cause every question is a dumb question.

Unless maybe you change the barrel to 16" and put a stock on, then register as a rifle.

Not sure...they may confiscate it or  if they are nice they'll give you opportunity to ship it back in the us mainland....i would call hpd for this question to be sure

I'm fairly certain that if you take it to HPD, they'll take it from you.

I seem to remember a situation like this where someone tried to register an "assault pistol" and it was taken from him.

I think they'll only release it to a gun shop.

Your options are to sell it to gun shop/ have gun shop ship it out of state/ turn it in to HPD.
Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
