I reload 762x39 Steel Tula Cases....Should be the same thing....Just gotta check the primer diameter.  I use Standard Large Rifle Primers remove the anvil carefully.

Resizing the cases is a little more effort.  The good thing is I dont care about picking up the cases....just throw them away.

For the 762x39 I feel the cases are more consistant internally.  I wash them in simple green and dry them.

I have not had to trim any cases yet they all within spec. accuracy with my AR is dead on. 123gr Hornady A-Max

Oh yeah depriming is fun......a little different method to get the out primer out....

Speed, isnt the tula berdan primed(most or all steel cased milsurp)? what primer are you using,no modification?

Yes it is Berdan primed.

i use the water method to get them out.  once the primer is out just dry the shells and resize and reload.

But regular Large Rifle primers fit.  You will need to remove the anvil in the center of the primer. USE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.  Wear Goggles. 

Ask MACSAK for some old dental tools.  They are great for taking out the Anvil.

oh yeah side note: MAKE SURE THE PAPER BETWEEN THE ANVIL AND THE PRIMER STAYS THERE!

 If they are loose when I install them, i use a little superglue and it also seals it. (I used epoxy when I was a kid, no such thing as superglue)

Clarification: Install the primer.  If it feels like it wants to fall out easily then superglue it in.  or if you feel uncomfortable then NEXT Case!

I use federal primers, never tried CCI, I will on the next batch.

But most of the time the primer goes in smoothly with no problems.

I will post pictures next time I do all this.  But probably not til after the gunshow.

Been wanting to reload this round for a while but I could never make it my financial worthwhile.  At $180 for a case of 440 rounds of surplus ammo, that breaks down to about $0.41 per round.  With current prices of reloading components, I put the cost to reload at around $0.46:

Primer: $0.038 (1000 @ $38)
Bullet:   $0.22
Powder: $0.206 (45 gr at $32/pound)

I guess if military surplus is scarce or you're looking for accuracy or just reloading for experience or for the heck of it, reloading makes sense.

I am not sure about 56R. But I'm doing 762x39 and its for accuracy and because x39 brass is so damn expensive.

I am also not sure on the size of the 56R primers.  I will have to grab a shell at the range next time.

I bet hand loads will help the accuracy in a Mosin with a good barrel.

Plus, with steel cases, you can use a magnet to pick them up!

ive got great condition steel casings if u want em. i probably have around 400. after i shot my first spam can i stopped saving em. was gonna use water to pop em out like speedtek, but as farknocker mentioned its actually cheaper to shoot surplus.
