I was thinking about the Tyke the elephant incident. If I remember correctly the police was out matched. Their handguns did nothing against Tyke and just infuriated him more. I believe it was a civilian letting one of the police officers a rifle to help take him down. I was thinking my 12g shotgun with slugs but you may have to be up close which you don't want to be. Will it even penetrate enough? Then I was thinking my Desert Eagle .50 AE but it's not easy to handle (it's more like I don't want them to scratch it). Maybe my .338 but that too heavy and not maneuverable enough since it's a moving target. Would my .223/5.56 rifle even do anything like my other handguns? What would you give the cops?

Tyke was in full rage at the outset.  The 9mm pistol rounds did not damage tyke but they did act to distract and saved a life maybe two.  A 30-30 lever action was loaned and tyke was stopped but finally put down by injection.

Sad day.

BTW, Tyke was a she. I didn't know that either till recently.

They ran into magnum but the police officer never have his long gun permit.

300 win mag would have done it.

I would have just used some E99.

I personally know a couple of guys who used the rampage as an excuse to buy their .458s.  You can bet that a lot more elephant rifles (and ammo) were sold in Honolulu after that happened.

Personally, I wouldn't loan any of my guns to any LEOs--too much liability and unless Tyke were on my property or threatening the lives of people around me, it's not my business to put it down.

If Tyke were on my street then I guess I'd have to break out the M-1 Garand and some specialized ammo.

I think the Honolulu Zoo has a .375 on hand for emergencies but I'll bet they would neither confirm nor deny its' existence.

I had a conversation with the officer you see shooting the elephant with his S & W 9mm(went in 2" BTW)

Told him I have a 375 H & H with 300 gr Solids that I had custom built for Africa.

He asked, "WHERE the Hell were you when I needed it?"

I have 3 other friends with 375 H & Hs.

We all have several boxes of factory  300 gr Solids and 300 gr soft nose bullets, just in case......

Elephants are routinely gunned down by poachers using ak-47's in Africa.  .303 British has also been used in the past on them as well by English hunters.

I think the key issue would be penetration and not expansion.  I think any fast .30 caliber, fmj, would do with enough shots.  Obviously a .375hh would be better, so would any appropriate safari round that 95% would never need to own.

That being said, shooting an elephant with anything other than a classic double rifle is just so un-classy.

my brother lives in anchorage. very regularly fishes the russian river and the copper river. he put down a charging brown bear with his Glock 20 in 10MM. This is what made me decided to buy the 10mm in the first place. i believe it took 4 shots to kill the big boar.

check some hot 10mm ballistics before you doubt. also tthere are multiple stories up there of fisherman killing bears with .22's in defensive situations. obviously not ideal but luckily got the job done for them.

Didn't Ted Nugent use his glock 20 to gun down an Asian water buffalo while bow hunting? I know that that is his preferred backup gun when going after dangerous game.
