For some odd reason I actually entertained going this route to go hunting.  But no one I know is rigged up to so.  So I can't get any hands on info on it.

I've got a barrel and bolt on the way. My intention is for hunting as well. I just wanted to talk to others here on island that shoot it. I know people on island use it. WGS carries it and Henry says he sells quite a bit of it.

Did you buy a complete upper?  Who did you get it from?  This round intrigues me -- in fact I was thinking of starting a thread about this when yours appeared.   I have read that 458 SOCOM is alot like the venerable 45/70 government

I ordered just the barrel and bolt from SBR. I have the rest of the parts. It uses the same projectile as the 45-70.

It's a bit of a necro, but I've been toying with the idea of getting a "thumper" style upper for my AR. Mostly for shits and giggles. I considered the .50 Beowulf and .450 Bushmaster, but the .458 seems to run a little ahead of the pack. Especially since I will likely begin reloading for it after the initial investment.

Not sure yet if I want to drop the money on a Wilson, the Rock River Beast looks tempting for the price.

What's .458 pricing and availability on island like nowadays?

Regarding 458 Socom using same bullets as 45-70. Correct .458 diameter, but don't use cast bullets as it may plug your gas port. Also check out bullet's ogive to insure it will feed properly in your AR. Most heavier .458 400 grains + bullet ogives are pretty blunt (might jam).
Heard best bullets for 458 Socom are made by Hawk. Shoot Barnes originals 400 & 300 grain SP semi spitzers in my Muzzle loader & 458 win mag. Expensive but have pretty good BC. Those Barnes originals (Lead core) really put the hurt on game and hold together. Love big holes and blood trails. Complete pass throughs haven't recovered one yet.
Good luck!
