I call bullshit. How are you going to compare what the general public does to what the police do.

The author does go on at some length with caveats about the difficulty of acquiring reliable data, especially for law enforcement officers committing crimes, but he does have some fairly sound data (with links) for comparing "domestic" firearm homicides committed by law enforcement to CCW permitted civilians. In those cases, he is not comparing what law enforcement might do "on the job" ("justifiable or unjustified homicides in the line of duty"), but only what they do "off duty". How would comparing unjustified homicides upon spouses/domestic partners be invalid? The larger point the author is arguing is that the propaganda about issuing qualified civilians CCW permits resulting in frequent public bloodbaths is simply false.

Why would you not compare them?  It sounds like you don't have a valid reason to disbelieve the claims made, so instead you're just saying that the police shouldn't be compared to private citizens.  Why is that?  Are police officers a different species?  Comparing domestic homicides by police officers off-duty to homicides committed by private citizens seems like a fair apples-to-apples comparison to me.

Yes they are a "different species". It's a proven, and studied fact that police officers live in a sub-culture which alters their thought patterns.

Hmmm, OK. But, what do you mean "alters their thought patterns?" And any citations to back up your claim would be helpful....Thanks

Just my opinion but the CCW stats vs police stats may be different because police tend to be exposed to more varied kinds of situations due to the nature of their jobs.  In some cases, CCW may actually have an element of surprise while PDs may not for example.

Someone responding to a random 911 call may have to deal with and think through a lot more variables than someone dealing with a self defense situation for example.

Not sure about citations but I can imagine that officers who are exposed to scum or crime all the time may have a different mindset that most regular people.  Kind of similar to soldiers being exposed to war may undergo PTSD, but a little different.

Of course, there are exceptions where some are better able to compartmentalize those things and not bring it to their personal lives. But some may not be as good in this ability.

Then again, back to the original point... Having good guys with CCW in addition to PD will benefit a community by making it more dangerous for bad guys.
