I'm looking for a cheap red dot sight for my Remington 1100 shotgun. Nothing fancy and this would be mainly for home defense. Also once in a great while I wouldn't mind doing traps with it so will a red dot work for that too? What would you recommend? Do they make a special mount that mounts directly to the receiver instead of mounting a picatinny rail first?

I like the style of the first pic but what's really the difference between the two styles?

I'm a huge fan or RMR's on a shotgun.

I bought a Burris "speed bead" mount and swapped the optic to a RMR.

Here's a pic.

The 11-87 with the Burris fastfire has been switched to a RMR as well.

I currently run RMR's on both the Benelli and 11-87.

I sight them in at 15 yards to hit point of aim and with buck shot they're spot on accurate from 3 yards to about 40 yards.

The RMR is always on so there's no fumbling with switches and with it sandwiched between the butt stock and the receiver, it sits close enough to the eye to give you a huge field of view.

The burris aint cheap.  Oh and mines comes with a pistol grip so will it still fit? I also kinda don't like the ghost sights. Takes too long to line up the front and rear but at the same time it's a shotgun so you don't have to have the best aim. I will have to think about it. I didn't really want to pimp out this one too much. I'd rather do it to the Mossberg 590.

the pistol grip on most shotguns fit on just like a regular stock, they are matched in size and use the same attachment hardware
the speedbead goes in between the receiver and stock just like a sling mount would

Won't help in clays much but for HD it's badass.
 I had one flashlight I found mounted under barrel on Mossy 500 and beam throw approximated shot spread at various distances.
Basically hit with a flashlight and the shotgun would hit it. ( Distances to about 35 feet )

I bought the cheap Barska ACOG look-alike and it handles 12 gauge recoil.
Had a friend who bought an expensive light integrated into the forearm and it blew up in like 2 shots.

Speedbead is badass though as no rail required and mounts low.

this is what i was taught also
you need to look for a light that has a bright central beam spot (yeah, i know that's not the physics term)
and have it approximate the spread of the pellets
and it acts like a "laser", but also tells you the spread of the shot

I was thinking of just shooting with the bead sight for the daytime. Kinda like clay shooting -- With a proper eye alignment on the barrel, just put the bead on target and shoot.

But you're right... For HD, one might not always have time or space for a proper cheek weld. Maybe learn to point shoot with the stock on the hip?  A laser or a spread laser like this might also work. Expensive though!
